I caved and bought $500 worth of Westman Atelier makeup products to see if they’re worth the hype. I’m sharing my brutally honest review of eight bestsellers.
Is Westman Atelier clean beauty?
The line is vegan and cruelty free and free of silicones, parabens, PEGs, talc, synthetic fragrance and phthalates. From a purist’s standpoint, Westman Atelier is not clean. They’re not 100% natural and do include synthetics in their products. If that’s not your jam, check out my guide to truly non-toxic makeup.
I feel like the brand overall is a bit overhyped, but that’s not to say that there aren’t some stellar products in the line. Their products look and feel expensive and the formulas are sophisticated albeit not all natural. Westman Atelier feels like a status symbol brand in the same way that Fenty is among the young generation.
I tried Vital Foundation Stick
What I’ve noticed is I can’t use Westman Atelier’s foundation stick on bare skin. My skin absolutely needs to be well moisturized and prepped for this to look decent. Otherwise it’s okay, but it’s not my favorite clean foundation for sure. At nearly 70 buckaroos it’s one of the priciest options in clean beauty. I find that it’s creamy and glides on like velvet, leaving a natural almost matte finish. It also provides great medium coverage for my skin. However, I don’t find it all that buildable because it starts to look and feel cakey. There’s some innovative ingredients like Berryflux vita extract which helps boost skin hydration, camellia seed oil for antioxidant protection, plant based Squalane and coconut oil. Sadly, I don’t feel this is worth repurchasing as it’s super expensive and doesn’t have an all natural formula.
I tried Baby Cheeks Blush Stick
I’d have to say this was my second favorite Westman Atelier product. Before I get into it, I’m showing the entire amount of product when it was new in the photo above. It’s crazy how much of makeup is mostly packaging and this is across the entire industry. Overall, I find this to be a creamy and moisturizing blush with a lovely satin finish and decent color payoff that lasts throughout the day. Coquette is a very youthful peachy pink that leans more pink than peach which I like. It’s versatile and I find that it works great as both a lip product and blush. Love that it has raspberry leaf stem cell extract, jojoba oil, and Vitamins C and E. My only complaint is there’s a few iffy ingredients like alumina and lake dyes.
I tried Lit Up Highlight Stick
I’ve enjoyed the Westman Atelier highlight stick and would consider this to be another standout from the line if you’re in the market for a new highlighter. It’s a balm that doesn’t feel too balm-y and glides on like a dream. I find that it leaves a natural looking “lit” sheen that isn’t overly glassy or greasy. It’s pretty darn sophisticated when it comes to performance. If I feel my skin looks dull, I just use a bit of concealer and this highlight stick to brighten up my face instantly. My only complaint is that this particular product doesn’t contain the skin-improving actives that their other makeup has.
I tried Vital Skincare Concealer
Don’t be fooled by how small this concealer is because it actually contains more product than the larger ILIA concealer. Westman Atelier’s is 0.20 oz and ILIA’s is 0.16 despite it looking double the size. I love how compact and travel friendly it is. I don’t carry foundation around with me, but having this in my purse to touch up my base on the go is great. For me the coverage is a solid medium and it wears fine throughout the day. I appreciate that it contains advanced actives like peptides to boost collagen, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, coffee leaf extract to combat dark circles, Gentian Root and licorice root. It almost feels like an eye treatment and makeup product in one!
I tried Lip Suede Matte Lipstick
I have to say the Lip Suede was one of the few standout products out of all the Westman Atelier products I tried in my personal opinion. There’s not that many “oh you fancy huh” lipsticks in clean beauty and this one fills the gap. I love how it applies like mousse. The color payoff is strong and the finish is semi-matte. It’s free of silicones, PEGs, parabens, phthalates and talc and I appreciate that they use anti-aging actives like peptides, Vitamin C, Meadowfoam extract and hyaluronic acid. The magnetic cap with a hidden mirror inside for easy application on the go is also a nice plus!
I tried Vital Skincare Complexion Drops
Complexion Drops is a serum skin tint that’s loaded with skincare actives like Tsubaki Oil, Ginseng and Pomegranate Extract in a hydrating Squalane oil base. I do like this skin tint, but it’s not something I typically reach for. It gives sheer coverage and a dewy hydrated finish. However, you have to really love a dewy look to like this product (think ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint). If I had to choose between the foundation stick and complexion drops, I’d definitely go for the former.
I tried Eye Want You Mascara
I tried Vital Pressed Skincare Powder
I was not impressed by the mascara, but it will probably work just fine for people with normal lashes. It’s got a clean formula of plant-based wax (candellila and carnauba wax) and Organic Shea Butter. I didn’t like the bulky packaging in this particular instance. I need a longer, thin handle when using a mascara for precise application, not this short stubby one.
Ugh I love this so much but I can’t afford it. I was surprised at how much I liked this finishing powder but holy moly at $75 it’s so overpriced. It’s a beautiful, soft micro-milled powder that helps give my makeup an airbrushed finish. I looove that it has innovative skincare ingredients like probiotics, quinoa seed extract and Vitamin C. It comes in five different shades.
