9 Best Natural Leave In Conditioner I’ve Tried

I’ve used a ton of clean, non toxic leave in conditioners over the last ten years and I’m sharing the best ones. The best leave-in conditioner is made with natural plant goodness and without harmful chemicals like formaldehyde releasers, parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, PFAS, or PEGs.

Toxins to Avoid

  • Formaldehyde releasers: Preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea slowly release formaldehyde
  • Parabens: Preservatives like methylparaben and propylparaben that have been studied for possible hormone-disrupting effects
  • Phthalates: linked to hormone disruption
  • Synthetic fragrance (“fragrance” or “parfum”): A catch-all term that can cover dozens of undisclosed chemicals and is a common cause of scalp irritation and allergies.
  • PFAS (“forever chemicals”): Found in some smoothing and anti-frizz products. Look for ingredients with “fluoro” in the name, like PTFE.
  • Cyclic silicones (D4, D5, D6): Linked to environmental and health concerns (restricted in EU). Other silicones aren’t toxic, but they can build up and weigh hair down.
  • PEGs and ethoxylated ingredients: Ingredients like PEG-100 stearate and anything ending in “-eth” (such as ceteareth-20) can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane.
  • Ethanolamines (DEA, TEA, MEA): Can form nitrosamines, which are potential carcinogens, when combined with certain other ingredients.
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI): can cause of allergic skin reactions.

Types of Leave In Conditioner

  • Spray leave-ins: Water-based mists best for fine or thin hair
  • Milk leave-ins: Silky, lotion-like formulas that sit between a spray and a cream and best for thin or flat hair.
  • Cream: Thicker, richer formulas best for curly hair, thick hair, or dry hair
  • Serum: Concentrated treatments that usually target specific concerns like frizz, shine, or damage
  • Oil: Seals in moisture and adds shine to the ends
  • Mousse: Leave in that usually doubles as a styling product to add volume and light hold
  • Balm: The richest option for very dry, coarse, or tightly coiled hair

Leave-In vs Heat Protectant

Heat protectants are leave-in conditioners by nature but not all leave-in products protect hair from heat. A leave-in conditioner is designed for moisturizing, detangling, smoothing frizz, and adding softness, whether or not you use heat. A heat protectant is specifically formulated to create a protective barrier around the hair cuticle, reducing thermal damage, breakage, and split ends from blow dryers, straighteners, or curling iron. If a leave-in conditioner or serum doesn’t list a temperature like 450°F, don’t rely on it to protect your hair from heat damage.

Reverie MILK Anti-Frizz Leave-In Treatment

I tried Reverie MILK Anti-Frizz Leave-In Treatment

Reverie MILK Leave In Treatment is an OG and one of the most luxurious leave in conditioners in clean beauty. This is a lightweight leave-in with a soft creamy serum consistency that instantly absorbs. It tames frizz while also protecting, strengthening, and moisturizing, without weighing hair down. I love that it’s locally handcrafted in California with botanical ingredients, including ones derived from coconuts, olives, almonds, and mushrooms. This has the most sophisticated scent out of all the leave-in conditioners I’ve tried and feels like fine fragrance for hair! It comes from a blend of 16 essential oils and has an herbaceous woodsy scent that smells almost identical to Christophe Robin hair products. If you’re not into strong scents, I would skip this.

I tried Augustinus Bader The Leave In Hair Treatment

Augustinus Bader’s leave in treatment is THE most luxury leave-in conditioner that’s vegan, fragrance-free, and made without silicones, parabens, or sulfates. This leave in treatment does have a very nice light, silky, creamy consistency that’s almost fluid like. It’s formulated with their proprietary TFC8, a complex of vitamins, lipids, and peptides that helps deliver nutrients to the scalp, follicles, and strands. This instantly softens and helps detangle my hair and botanicals like neem, shikakai, and rambutan provide healthy nourishment and antioxidants. I find that it absorbs quickly, leaves no residue, and doesn’t weigh my hair down. It has some natural protection against UV but I wouldn’t consider it a true heat protectant.

leave in conditioner 100 percent pure

I tried 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin Leave-In Conditioner

100 Percent Pure’s Multi Vitamin Leave In Conditioner has been the biggest surprise of the year among all the clean hair products I’ve tried. It doesn’t look like anything impressive at first glance, but this has the most satisfyingly hydrating creamy consistency and really works so well on my dry hair. Like all of 100 Percent Pure’s products, this has a 100% natural formula with vegan keratin, B vitamins like biotin and panthenol, and vitamins A, C, and E, all on an organic aloe base. It detangles and smooths without leaving a greasy residue, and it helps protect hair before heat styling and has a very subtle floral scent from essential oils like geranium, lavender, and rose.

It’s also SO conveniently travel friendly that I take it on all my trips versus my other leave in hair products. It’s also the only packaging that’s a tube so all I have to do is squeeze it versus press down on a pump, which has been difficult because of my finger injury.

rootist leave in conditioner repair serum

I tried The Rootist Biobrew Leave In Repair Serum

The Rootist Biobrew Fermented Leave In Repair Serum is actually a spray conditioner that hydrates both hair and scalp AND protects hair from heat damage. It’s clinically shown to control frizz, boost shine, protect from heat, and repair damage, and it also helps keep your scalp balanced and hydrated. I love that it’s made with strengthening peptides, vitamin C, and the brand’s own ferment from a superfood blend of roots and mushrooms, basically kombucha for your hair. It protects up to 450°F, so it doubles as a natural heat protectant. I need to give it a good shake to mix up all the ingredients and the color of the liquid goes from clear to a milky pink. The scent is a fresh, fizzy floral that’s pretty subtle. The Rootist leave in offers the least amount of product compared to other non-toxic leave in conditioners.

I tried Briogeo Miracle Mist Leave-In Conditioner

Brioge’s Miracle Mist is a bond repair leave-in conditioner for damaged hair and heat protectant up to 450°F that’s widely accessible at Sephora. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a spray conditioner and has fine hair that’s been through bleach or a lot of heat styling. It’s formulated to transform bonds weakened by heat and bleach, and is a two-layer mist, so you shake it up before spraying. I love that it’s got advanced actives like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and rosehip oil. It’s also made without harsh sulfates, silicones, parabens, or phthalates, which makes it an easy swap if you’re cleaning up your hair routine. My main gripe is that the short nozzle is not my favorite and a bit difficult to press down. You do get great value for money since it’s a generous 5 oz.

I tried Ceremonia Guava Leave-In Conditioner

Ceremonia’s leave-in conditioner has the lightest serum consistency in this list. It’s the juiciest, most lightweight hair serum I’ve tried that isn’t a spray and sinks in instantly to hydrate my strands. Love that it has Latin ingredients like superfruit guava to help protect hair from UV, tamarind for deep hydration and shine, and avocado to fight frizz. If spray leave-ins aren’t cutting it for your curls or frizz, a cream like this is a great option.
