The ROUND LAB Birch Juice Moisturising Sun Cream is one of the current K-beauty sunscreens in my arsenal so I thought I would share my thoughts. This is the most popular sunscreen at the moment in Korea and has won a number of awards, so I had to buy it off Amazon and see what the hype was all about. Round Lab is a chemical sunscreen using UV filters that are approved in Europe and Asia but not in the US yet because the US is behind on approving them. Instead of the usual Avobenzone and Homosalate you find in American sunscreens, these filters are called Uvinal T 150 (protects against UVB rays), Uvinal A Plus (protects against UVA rays), Tinosorb M (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) and Iscotrizinol (protects against UVB and some UVA rays). None of these are linked to damage to coral reefs.
Is Round Lab sunscreen safe?
The ingredients list is not 100% natural and is more on the level of Tower 28 and Kosas in terms of cleanliness. Round Lab sunscreen does contain 74 natural derived minerals from the deep sea waters of Ulleungdo Island, Niacinamide, Adenosine, sap from silver birth trees and sodium hyaluronate.
Does it have a scent?
There’s no scent.
How does Round Lab compare to Beauty of Joseon?
I’ve been using both Round Lab and Beauty of Joseon sunscreens this summer, and they’re very very similar. The only thing I notice that’s different is that Round Lab is a bit more emollient than Beauty of Joseon and seems to be more moisturizing. Round Lab is actually supposed to act as a moisturizer with SPF benefits so this makes sense.
In terms of ingredients, the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen is a bit cleaner and more skin-beneficial than Round Lab. Round Lab’s formula begins with a base of water and synthetics while Beauty of Joseon’s begins in rice bran water and glycerin. So for value for money, Beauty of Joseon offers more.
What is the consistency?
It’s a very light lotion with no white cast. However, it’s not the lightest of lightest and still functions as a moisturizer.
