Fable and Mane is a luxury hair care brand inspired by ancient Indian beauty rituals and Ayurvedic principles that has taken over social media. The brand was founded by siblings Akash and Nikita Mehta, who were deeply influenced by their grandmother’s traditional Indian hair care remedies. They aimed to share this part of their heritage with the world through their range of holistic and natural hair products.
Fable and Mane’s most popular product, the HoliRoots Hair Oil, is a pre-wash treatment that promotes hair growth, strength, and shine. The brand also offers shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks, all of which are vegan and cruelty-free. Each product is formulated with a blend of potent herbs, roots, and flowers, such as ashwagandha, dashmool, and jasmine, designed to nourish and revitalise the hair and scalp.
Fable and Mane is also committed to ethical and sustainable practices. They use recyclable packaging and ensure their ingredients are ethically sourced. The brand also gives back to the community through its Fable Fund, which supports wildlife conservation in India.
I was curious about this brand because I kept seeing it referred to as clean hair care, yet I hadn’t seen anyone in my community talking about them. I decided to grab a few Fable and Mane products to see what all the hype was about. I would not consider Fable and Mane clean hair care for clean beauty enthusiasts, but I can see why mainstream beauty lovers would consider it clean.

Besides their website, Fable and Mane is also sold at Sephora, Cult Beauty, Boots and Douglas.
Is Fable and Mane clean beauty?
Fable and Mane is much cleaner than conventional hair care, but they are not clean beauty despite Sephora categorizing them as a Clean At Sephora brand.. Phenoxyethanol is used as the preservative and fragrance is used for the scent. There is no mention of their fragrance being clean or phthalate-free.
Here’s what their website FAQ says about their fragrance:
Formulated with your wellness in mind, our HoliRoots Hair Oil features a divine and awakening scent, crafted by the world’s best creative perfumer in Paris: Madurai, an utterly sublime fragrance, fit for the gods. The majestic top note of almond is soon touched by freshness from the beautiful Indian jasmine sambac and woven into a precious red champaca, transported from the Indian temples. The heart mesmerises with patchouli, neroli oil and petitgrain, as the rich and unforgettable warmth is composed from a base of cedarwood and tonka bean.
Our HoliRoots Shampoo, Conditioner and Mask feature the scent, Kerala. Inspiring a notion of wanderlust, reminiscent of the generous Indian nature, the fragrance opens with coconut water for a beautiful freshness, a dash of cardamom and altogether balanced by juicy papaya. The heart introduces a stunning element of flora from the tiger orchid and Indian jasmine sambac, coupled with rice milk for an unexpected allure. Yet, it is the base of cedarwood, vanilla and coconut milk that elevates this scent to addictive warmth, making it one that is truly transporting and utterly exquisite.
Overall, I find the Fable and Mane products to be scented quite strongly and that is the main downside to using this brand for me. If they had a clean fragrance or used essential oils I would have been much more excited.
HoliRoots Hair Oil
Most people are no stranger to hair oil treatments (who hasn’t done a coconut oil hair mask before?). But hair oiling is actually an ancient Indian tradition that dates back thousands of years.
Hair oiling offers numerous benefits that contribute to the overall health and vitality of your hair. Firstly, it nourishes the scalp, providing essential nutrients to the hair follicles, which stimulates growth and thickness. Regular hair oiling can result in significantly thicker, shinier, and healthier hair.
It also moisturizes the hair, reducing dryness and preventing the formation of split ends. And lastly, hair oiling can also aid in reducing hair fall. Massaging the scalp with oil increases blood circulation, strengthening the roots of the hair, which can decrease hair loss.
HoliRoots Hair Oil is a lightweight oil thanks to Caprylic Triglyceride being the main ingredient. Most of the Fable and Mane HoliRoots Hair Oil ingredients are commonly found in plenty of other hair oils like castor oil, sesame oil, jojoba seed oil and grapeseed oil. There’s a couple notable ingredients that pay homage to its Indian roots:
- Ashwagandha: also known as Indian Ginseng is one of the most powerful adaptogens for beauty. An Ayurvedic remedy to help the body adapt to stress and build resilience, strengthening the scalp.
- Dashmool: “The Ten Roots”, referring to the traditional composition of the formula is a grounding plant remedy which can be used as a nourishing scalp tonic that helps to strengthen the scalp skin and calm the nerves.

Fable and Mane Hair Mask
This is a silky, rich pudding-like hair mask that has a very enjoyable consistency. Unfortunately, fragrance is high on the list like the rest of their products and the scent feels overpowering. I do love that it has banana fruit which has great hair health benefits. The Fable and Mane Hair mask also boasts a complex of coconut water + cocoa butter + sugarcane that promotes cell growth and keeps hair strong by stimulating the scalp. While the Fable and Mane hair mask works well at softening and conditioning my hair, I strongly prefer using a natural fragrance hair mask.

Fable and Mane HoliRoots Shampoo
The HoliRoots Shampoo is a super creamy shampoo that’s formulated to moisturize medium to thick hair types. This is probably going to be too heavy for fine hair unless your hair is super dry or does well with highly moisturizing shampoos, and it’s definitely not for an oily scalp. I will add that a shampoo like this would be good for the hair lengths only while avoiding the scalp if you have dry hair. I love the banana, coconut, rice milk and Indian jasmine sambac ingredients, but unfortunately the ingredients are as clean as I’d like. There’s fragrance high up in the list again, which I might be able to forgive in a hair mask or conditioner that only touches my strands, but I’d rather avoid applying it to my scalp.
