I’ve tried tons of clean sunscreen sprays over the years and am sharing my favorites! The best non toxic sunscreen spray will be free of petroleum ingredients, PABA, parabens, phthalates, BPA, oxybenzone, avobenzone, fragrance, butane, and propane.
I’ll be sharing each SPF spray compares based off criteria like how well they spray, white cast level, water resistance and ingredients.
Ingredients to avoid
- Oxybenzone: hormone disruptor and harmful to coral reefs
- Octinoxate: potential hormone disruptor and reef-toxic
- Homosalate: may accumulate in the body and disrupt hormones
- Octocrylene: can form harmful byproducts and may cause skin irritation
- Avobenzone – unstable in sunlight unless stabilized, may degrade into irritants
- Parabens (e.g., methylparaben, propylparaben) – preservatives linked to hormone disruption
- Fragrance: common cause of allergic reactions and skin irritation
- Phthalates: used to make fragrance last longer; linked to hormone disruption
- Retinyl palmitate: form of vitamin A that may increase sun sensitivity
- Aerosol propellants like butane & propane: flammable and pose inhalation risk
- Nanoparticles in sprays: may be harmful when inhaled, especially uncoated types
Best Mineral Sunscreen Sprays Compared

I tried Babo Botanicals Sheer Zinc Sunscreen
Babo is one of my top favorite mineral sunscreen sprays because it’s suitable for even the most sensitive skin, super clean AND affordable. I found that it sprays the widest and covers the most surface area out of all the ones I tested. The formula is fragrance free, hypoallergenic, has a ph level of 8-9 and is enriched with aloe vera, sunflower oil, watercress extract, kudzu root extract and meadowsweet flower extract. I wouldn’t consider it water resistant and I do need to re-spray every time I come out of the ocean or pool. I love that it feels so light and weightless without leaving any sticky sensation.
Price: $21.50 for 6 oz
What I liked: Sprays the widest out of all the sunscreen sprays
Actives: 12% non-nano zinc oxide
✓ Extra sensitive skin friendly ✓ Fragrance free ✓ Hypoallergenic ✓ Vegan & Cruelty-Free ✓ Reef-Friendly ✓ Non-aerosol

I tried Thinksport All Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Spray
Another one of my favorite non-toxic spray sunscreens is Thinksport. It feels the most water resistant to me, so I like to use this one on my active sweaty days. I love that this spray offers SPF 50 with a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which also means it goes on very clear leaving no white cast whatsoever. This one gives me peace of mind thanks to its high sun protection factor from almost 16% zinc oxide and an additional 3.4% titanium dioxide. It doesn’t have the most skincare ingredients I’ve seen, but it does have Banana Fruit Extract, Bentonite and Glycerin.
Price: $18.99 for 6 oz
What I liked: Sprays clear with no white cast at all
Actives: Titanium Dioxide 3.4%, Zinc Oxide 15.7%
✓ Vegan & Cruelty-Free ✓ Reef-Friendly ✓ Dermatologist tested ✓ Non-aerosol

I tried Pipette Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30
Pipette’s SPF spray is super clean and safe for babies and adults and has some fantastic ingredients like sugarcane-derived suqalane, bisabolol and aloe leaf juice. I recently started using Pipette’s sunscreen spray and was pleasantly surprised at how effective and affordable it is! I find that it feels light yet still moisturizing enough for dry skin. My only complaint is the spray does have more of a white cast than others I’ve tried. I did not find it to be water resistant though.
Price: $10 for 6 oz
Actives: 14% non-nano zinc oxide
✓ Pediatrician approved ✓Vegan & Cruelty-Free ✓ Reef-Friendly ✓ Leaping Bunny Certified ✓ Fragrance free ✓ Hypoallergenic ✓ Dermatologist tested ✓ Non-aerosol

I tried 100 Percent Pure Yerba Mate Mist SPF 30
I’ve used 100 Percent Pure’s sunscreen spray for almost ten years and it’s still a favorite of mine after all these years. It sprays on super sheer without a white cast and emits a very fine, even mist. The formula feels super hydrating and the ingredients are clean and simple with antioxidants from jojoba oil, Yerba mate and safflower oil. My main complaint is that it’s on the expensive side and comes in a smaller bottle that’s neither TSA friendly nor the usual 6 oz. Like every other product saying they’re 80 minutes water resistant, I find that re-application is necessary whenever it comes into contact with water.
Price: $38 for 3.4 oz
What I liked: Sprays super sheer
Actives: 12% zinc oxide
✓ Vegan & Cruelty-Free ✓ Reef-Friendly ✓ Fragrance free ✓ Hypoallergenic ✓ Non-aerosol

I tried COOLA Sunscreen Spray
I’ve tried dozens of COOLA products and had to include them because they’re literally in every store (Ulta, Target, Sephora, Whole Foods). It’s super convenient to try them out in store before committing. They’ve got a huuuge variety of sunscreens to choose from and most use chemical UV filters, so be sure to check individual ingredients. Almost all their products do contain at least 70% organic ingredients so that’s a major plus. On the downside, Coola’s products tend to be the priciest option.

I tried Suntegrity Milky Mineral Sun Serum Spray (luxe!)
Suntegrity’s Sun Serum Spray is the priciest option in this list, but definitely the most luxurious and skincare-focused as well. I find that it has a very thin, liquid consistency that absorbs really well. But it IS on the oily side, so I don’t think it would suit oily skin types when used as a face mist. For the body, it’s sooo moisturizing! I also love that it has virtually no white cast. It’s got a lovely fruity scent and has a bevy of skin-beneficial ingredients like Grapeseed oil, karanja oil, Squalane, Argan oil, Olive oil, Papaya fruit extract, mango fruit extracts and rice bran extract. I love that it offers a high SPF 50 using both non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I did not find it to be water or sweat resistant at all and it does streak down when I’m sweaty.
Price: $48 for 3.4 oz
Actives: 9.5% Zinc Oxide and 7.2% Titanium Dioxide
✓ Vegan & Cruelty-Free ✓ Reef-Friendly ✓ Good Face Project Approved ✓ Non-aerosol
