I’ve tried out the best non-toxic eyeliners over the years and am sharing my absolute favorites! The clean beauty eyeliners will be free of parabens, carbon black, formaldehyde, phthalates, PFAS, heavy metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, BHA, and synthetic fragrance.
Switching to a healthy eyeliner is so important because it’s being applied directly on the lash line and can accidentally enter the eye.
Toxins to avoid in Eyeliner
Always avoid waterproof eyeliners and avoid these common toxins found in conventional eyeliners, especially if you have sensitive eyes.
- Parabens: potential hormone disruptors
- Formaldehyde & formaldehyde-releasing preservatives: these pose a carcinogen risk and can cause eye/skin irritation
- Phthalates: can cause hormone disruption and reproductive toxicity concerns
- Carbon black / CI 77266 / pigment black 6 or 7: possible carcinogen and can potentially be contaminated with heavy metals
- Heavy metals (lead, nickel, chromium): neurotoxicity and allergic reactions
- Coal tar / synthetic dyes: these can cause irritation and can be contaminated

I Tried 100 Percent Pure Creamy Long Last Eyeliner
This is the creamiest eyeliner in the clean beauty space I’ve tried! It’s perfect for dry skin gals. It’s natural, vegan and non-toxic with skin nourishing ingredients like Jojoba, chamomile butter, and mango seed oil. It feels soo smooth and moisturizing and glides on seamlessly. It does smudge a little easier than other “drier” eyeliners so I wouldn’t recommend this for oily lids. Comes in three shades.

I tried 100 Percent Pure Long Last Liquid Eyeliner
This is my favorite non toxic liquid eyeliner of all time! 100 Percent Pure’s liquid eyeliner has the thinnest brush tip I’ve come across in clean beauty that allows for precise application. It’s got Activated Bamboo Charcoal, black tea, cocoa butter and herbs like rosemary, thyme and oregano, all in an aloe base. Somehow, it dries into almost a peel that I can just peel off at the end of the day. I love that it stays put all the day and doesn’t bleed when applied. Comes in three shades.

I Tried ILIA Clean Line Gel Liner
If you’re looking for a clean gel liner, my top pick is ILIA’s Clean Line Gel Liner. It’s extremely pigmented but can be smudged for a more natural look. I love how versatile this eyeliner is and the different types of looks I can create from soft and demure to bold and loud. It does deposit a ton of color so I find a little goes a long way. There’s not as many skin beneficial ingredients as other eyeliners in clean beauty, but it does have castor oil. Note that ILIA’s eyeliner isn’t the cleanest formula and contains silicones like dimethicone. I find the twist up mechanism sooo convenient, because having to manually sharpen eyeliners is so annoying!

Shades: Black, brown

I Tried Jones Road Beauty The Best Pencil Eyeliner
I’m a fan of Jones Road’s eyeliner and love how strongly pigmented this is. Even though the line overall isn’t the cleanest, I found their eye pencil has a decent formula with castor seed oil and Vitamin E. The formula has just the right amount of creaminess while leaning on the drier side, so it’s great for oily skin and lids! Even on my lids, it still glides well. I also get a kick out of how it looks just like a school pencil haha! This comes in the most colors out of all the clean eyeliners.
Price: $24
Shades: six shades

I Tried Honest Beauty Liquid Eyeliner
Honest Beauty makes a decent budget option for a liquid eyeliner that’s widely accessible and affordable. The tip doesn’t allow for the most precise application compared to my favorite, but if you’re skilled and have a steady hand you can absolutely make this work. I do find that it can easily bleed or apply messily if I’m not careful since so much product gets transferred. The formula is free of Parabens, Carbon Black Pigment, Silicones, and PEGs.

I Tried Fitglow Beauty Vegan Eyeliner Pencil
Fitglow Beauty has the cleanest and healthiest ingredients out of all the clean beauty eyeliners I’ve tried. It’s made almost entirely of certified organic ingredients including Cloudberry Seed Oil, meadowfoam seed oil, Mango seed oil and nourishing butters and waxes. Even with higher quality ingredients compared to other brands on the market, it remains more affordable at under $25. It feels so buttery and creamy when applied and comes with a small brush on the other end to soften and smoke out the line. I love the brown shade for a softer, more natural look!

Tried Kjaer Weis Eye Pencil
For a luxury non toxic eyeliner, I love the Kjaer Weis Eye Pencil. It’s got just the right amount of creaminess where it glides on super easily but doesn’t smudge at all. The formula is clean, organic and natural with Coconut Oil, Beeswax, and natural mineral pigments. It doesn’t contain any petroleum, parabens, artificial fragrance, or petrochemical emulsifiers. I love how strongly pigmented and long lasting it is. No complaints!
