I’ve tried dozens of clean ingredient lip glosses over the last decade and I’m sharing my curated favorites that made the cut! The best lip gloss is made with plant goodness and without any harmful or filler ingredients.

Toxins to Avoid in Lip Gloss
Whether it’s a lipstick, lip balm, lip oil or lip gloss, anything that goes on the lips warrants looking closer at ingredients. Everyone has different standards of purity, but here are some common ingredients found in lip gloss that you might want to avoid.
- Parabens: These are preservatives used to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold.
- Fragrance: This is a hormone-disrupting cocktail of up to 4000 untested chemicals.
- Lead: Lead is a neurotoxicant and can be dangerous even at small doses. The use of lead in cosmetics is regulated and is not intentionally put in lipstick but many color additives approved by the FDA are mineral-based and therefore contain trace amounts of lead. Keep in mind there is NO safe level of lead exposure.
- Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is derived from petroleum and has a polluting manufacturing process. It can go by many different names: Paraffinum Liquidum, Isododecane, Ozokerite, Cera Microcristallina, Paraffin, Petrolatum, Ceresin, Synthetic Wax, Isohexadecane, Polybutene, Isoparaffin, Isoeicosane, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Silicone Quaternium-17.
- Polyethylene and Polypropylene: These are microplastics often used for texture in lip products.
- Carmine: Carmine is derived from insects and is used to add red or pink hues to lipsticks.

I tried OGEE Beyond Clean Lip gloss
OGEE’s lip gloss is made entirely of certified organic and clean ingredients and has a slick texture that gives my lips a beautiful sheen. It gives a very sheer wash of color. I love that this lip gloss is 97% skincare and 3% makeup with jojoba, sunflower, castor, orange peel, Resurrection Leaf, ceramides, fenugreek seed extract. It comes in eight beautiful shades including a clear gloss. Consistency wise, I find that it leans more towards a lip oil because it’s thin and slick.

I’m loving INIKA Organic’s latest lip gloss. It’s creamy and silky and has skincare actives like peptide, ceramides, Sodium Hyaluronate and Sea Fern Extract. Love how it hydrates my lips while adding just a sheer wash of color. The formula is full of organic ingredients like organic castor seed oil, pomegranate seed oil, Olive fruit oil and botanicals like French Rose Flower Extract. It has the tiniest bit of vanilla for a yum factor. There’s 3 shades available.

I tried 100 Percent Pure Lip Gloss
I love 100% Pure’s lipsticks so I tried their lip gloss and immediately noticed how compact it is. The formula is absolutely packed with various oils, butters and fruit extracts like Strawberry, dragonfruit, beet, turmeric root, Blue Spirulina, blueberry, matcha green tea and more. They did have a formula change and no longer are fruit pigmented (disappointing!) but they’re still one of the cleanest options around.

I tried Araza Beauty Coconut Color Glossy Balm
I think that Araza is such a slept on clean makeup brand that offers organic ingredients, performance and value for money. The formula is mostly organic with organic beeswax, coconut and castor seed oils as well as their signature antioxidant-rich araza fruit extract. I’ve tried a bunch of their shades and the deeper ones are very strongly pigmented. I love the shade Sugar Poppy, which is a soft petal pink, the most! Love how hydrating and creamy this feels on my lips. There’s now 11 shades to choose from.

All the non toxic lip glosses I mention are among the cleanest options available on the market and cost between $20-$40. For a budget friendly option that’s still decent and only $12, I recommend Cocokind Ceramic Lip Blur Balms. It does have filler ingredients (polybutene, ethylhexyl palmitate), but a solid lip gloss for better beauty seekers.
