I’ve tried almost the entire line of Primally Pure and am sharing my brutally honest thoughts. I tested a dozen bestsellers including their new sunscreen, charcoal deodorants, body butter, Plumping Serum, tallow Everything Balm and home products.

Primally Pure is a 100% natural and organic skincare line from Southern California that is a crunchy mom’s dream come true. They never use seed oils or anything artificial, and they source meticulously from small family farms, including their own certified organic regenerative farm called Primal Pastures. If you’re looking for an entirely non-toxic beauty brand for your face, body and home, Primally Pure is a safe and convenient option.

I tried Sun Cream SPF 30
Primally Pure’s new sunscreen is made with a whopping 25% zinc oxide and organic ingredients like organic tallow, organic beeswax, organic mango butter and organic coconut oil. With just seven ingredients, the formula is super clean, safe and simple. It comes in an unscented and lavender mint scent. I personally think that with 25% zinc oxide content the SPF is probably higher than SPF 30 and more like SPF 50. I find the consistency to be somewhat similar to Badger sunscreens. It feels a bit oily and slick, but sinks into skin very easily, so there isn’t a heavy greasy residue leftover. It really does moisturize and soften my skin. But obviously, this one isn’t for you if you prefer a light, water-based type of sunscreen. My main complaint is that the twisty lid is awkward and it’s very difficult to squeeze the product out, so I to prefer to remove the entire cap.

I tried Sun Stick SPF 25
Their sunscreen stick has the exact same ingredients as the Sun Cream, just with 20% non nano zinc oxide instead of 25%. The ratio of ingredients is also different in that this is a super dense and rich balm. It was difficult to apply at first but once I broke the seal it glided on more easily. I’ve tried a lot of clean sunscreen sticks over the years, and this one doesn’t apply as effortlessly as the others. I personally would not re-purchase the stick.

I tried Sun Lip Balm SPF 15
Their Sun Lip Balm has the highest amount of zinc oxide (10%) I’ve seen in a non-tinted lip sunscreen. Brands usually put in less because the zinc oxide WILL cause a white cast on the lips. I do have ghostly white lips when I use this, so I have to top it off with a lip gloss or lipstick. I love how simple and natural the ingredients are with organic beeswax, organic tallow, organic coconut oil, organic mango butter and organic jojoba oil. The Lavender Mint one I tried also has added organic lavender oil and organic peppermint oil. I’m not a big fan of the cooling sensation some lip balms provide and this one is very subtle and not too strong.

I tried Charcoal Deodorant and Blue Tansy Deodorant
I think Primally Pure makes excellent non toxic deodorants, in terms of formulation and performance. Is it the strongest natural deodorant I’ve found on the market? Nope. But if you don’t have stubborn BO and appreciate a 100% natural deodorant stick, this is one worth trying. The formula is pretty much perfection. It applies smoothly and doesn’t crumble or get overly mushy. The ingredients include mostly organic ingredients like arrowroot powder, coconut oil, beeswax, tallow, essential oils as well as kaolin clay and baking soda. The baking soda is what makes it effective at neutralizing odors, but it can also be a cause for armpit rashes if you’re sensitive. I find the Charcoal deodorant has a subdued clean, fresh scent that’s very mild and the Blue Tansy one has a stronger sweet floral scent.

I tried Soothing Cream
Primally Pure’s Soothing Cream is like a solid face oil to me. It’s made with just eight ingredients and begins in a base of organic tallow, emu oil and jojoba oil. There’s also some essential oils and rosemary extract. I find the consistency to be smooth, rich and buttery but not heavy at all. The deep blue shade and blue tansy scent reminds me of May Windstorm’s Blue Cocoon. I love how deeply moisturizing and soothing this feels. It’s great whenever my skin feels extra dry or inflamed or as a last step in my skincare routine since it has the consistency of a face balm.
I’ve also tried their Plumping Serum, which I think is fantastic for mature and aging skin. The consistency and texture is incredibly rich and moisturizing. It’s extremely concentrated with zero filler ingredients and has astaxanthin, prickly pear seed oil and green coffee oil. It helps with collagen and elastin production, fighting free radical damage, and restoring skin elasticity. Note that I only use this at night because it has a deep orange hue. It sinks in and absorbs well and my skin feels supple and looks quite robust the next day.

I tried Everything Spray
The Everything Spray is a simple yet super versatile mist that can be used in so many different ways. It’s mainly a face toner, but can also be used as a wound spray and body mist. I personally am not a big fan of the scent because it does smell like ACV. The ingredients include Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Organic Lavender Hydrosol, Organic Witch Hazel, Magnesium Chloride Brine, Organic Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar as well as essential Oils of Organic Lavender and Organic Tea Tree. Bonus points for the beautiful hefty glass bottle and minimalist design.

I tried Eucalyptus Lavender Body Butter
I’m so impressed by Primally Pure’s body butters. They’re rich yet fluffy and smell amaaazing. I love using Eucalyptus Lavender before bed for its soothing scent and Almond Vanilla during the colder months since it smells like a sugar cookie. It feels dense and buttery at first, but melts into skin like an oil immediately. It’s basically a tallow body butter since the base is organic tallow. The formula is enhanced with more organic butters and oils like mango butter, shea butter, olive oil, sweet almond oil and essential oils.

I tried Bergamot Eucalyptus Body Polish
This is super moisturizing kind of body polish that only gentle exfoliates. Don’t expect heavy exfoliation action here (get yourself a Korean exfoliating mitt for that!). Yes it smells amazing and it’s got great ingredients like gotu kola, sugar crystals, coconut oil, spirulina. But I think it’s very overpriced for what it is. I’d prefer to get OSEA’s body scrub which offers 50% more product for a cheaper price.

I tried Sleep Spray
I actually really like this magnesium body spray they launched recently. I spray this all over my chest, armpits and soles of my feet before bed and I do think it helps me fall asleep faster. There IS a bit of an annoying tingly sensation that lingers for a while. The 2 oz bottle contains 2700 mg of magnesium chloride brine and is enhanced with organic lavender, bergamot, neroli, geranium and blue tansy oils. Love this as part of my bedtime ritual and it looks chic on my bedside table.

I tried Warm Citrus Spice Hand Soap
Like their candles, I found their natural hand soaps to be on the smaller end and offer the least value for money. I’ve tried tons of non-toxic hand soaps, and while Primally Pure’s is chic and gorgeous looking, it’s super small and expensive at $44 for 6.8 oz. But onto the nitty gritty. I find the consistency to be on the light, thin side. It provides a gentle lather and an excellent scent. I tried Warm Citrus Spice and it’s got festive cardamom, orange and cinnamon bark essential oils in an organic aloe vera juice base. It does have some interesting added ingredients like Cacao, Wildcrafted Ocotea, Wildcrafted Manuka and Organic Roman Chamomile which I don’t see often in organic hand washes. But, for a product that’s only going to stay on my skin for barely a hot minute, I don’t think I care for expensive botanical that are going to get rinsed off immediately.

I tried Cool Citrus Breeze Candle
In my brutally honest opinion I don’t think Primally Pure’s candles are worth it. I’ve tried dozens of non-toxic candle brands, and sadly, they offer the least value for money. But if you want to get your home and beauty shopping done at once, these are made with organic beeswax, coconut wax, and organic essential oils. I tried Cool Citrus Breeze and find it to smell sweet and fruity with a surprising spicy undercurrent. I also tried their limited edition Holiday candle and find it to be quite dark and smoky. My special hack to make this small candle burn slower and last longer is I trim the wick as short as possible for the first burn and continuously trim every few hours. Their jars are a small 6 oz while most candles are at least 8 oz.
