I Tried 8 Best Non Toxic Air Fryers (what I liked and didn’t)

I’ve bought and tested the top-rated air fryers over the last two years, and I’m sharing my honest thoughts on the best ones. The best non toxic air fryer is made with stainless steel and glass and without any harmful materials like Teflon, PFAS, PFOA, BPA, and other toxic chemicals.

Left to right: Aria, Big Boss, Our Place and GreenPan air fryer

I found that the best nontoxic air fryer is Cosori TurboBlaze for a basket style and Greenpan and Ninja are the best oven style. The best full glass air fryer is Fritaire.

Types of Air Fryers

  • Basket Air Fryer: The most common type and beginner-friendly. Food is placed in a pull-out basket where hot air circulates rapidly to crisp and cook it.
  • Oven-Style Air Fryer: Looks like a small countertop oven with racks and trays, and has more versatility than a basket
  • Air Fryer Toaster Oven: Combines air frying with a toaster oven, baking, broiling, toasting, and roasting functions.
  • Glass Dome Bowl Air Fryer: gives you a 360-degree view of your food cooking through the transparent bowl, can fit whole chickens and some can fit multiple racks for multi-level cooking.

My family and I have so much fun using Fritaire’s basket tumbler.

Wait, My Air Fryer is Toxic?

Many conventional air fryers are coated with Teflon, PTFE, PFAS, PFOA and BPA that will off gas when exposed to heat. They often contain:

  • PTFE coatings: when overheated above 500°F releases toxic fumes. Teflon is the trade name for the PTFE polymer.(1)
  • PFAS chemicals: these are “forever chemicals” linked to a bunch of issues.(2) They’re now on the California’s Prop 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. (3)
  • PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): chemical used in older non-stick coatings (4)
  • BPA: some plastic components contain BPA lining which leaches into food especially at high heat
  • Phthalates in plastic parts: can leach when plastic is exposed to high heat
  • Cheap aluminum baskets: uncoated aluminum can leach into acidic foods at high temp
  • Melamine components: toxic when heated
  • Cadmium and lead: found in low quality paints or coatings on cheaper imported models

How to reduce your toxic exposure

Here are some tips on how to find the safely air fry and minimize your exposure to the materials used:

  • Look for air fryers made with stainless steel, glass or ceramic parts (ceramic must be verified to be PFAS-free and PTFE-free to be legit nontoxic)
  • Avoid Teflon, PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, phthalates and BPA and look for “PFAS-free” or “Teflon free” in the description
  • Reduce your exposure to acrylamide (formed when starchy foods are cooked at high heat) by cooking at temps lower than 347°F and avoid over-browning and charring.
  • Use non-metal utensils like wood or silicone to avoid scratching the coating
  • Avoid cooking sprays with aerosol propellants and use a small amount of healthy oil applied directly instead like coconut oil or avocado oil.
  • Avoid placing in dishwasher to avoid high heat and wash by hand using a non-abrasive sponge
cosori air fryer non toxic
I find Cosori’s angled control panel sooo easy to use!

I tried Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0 Quart Air Fryer

Out of all the non toxic air fryers I’ve tried, I feel the Cosori TurboBlaze really stood out from the crowd and offers the best value for money. It feels like I’m using a premium high-end air fryer, but it only costs less than $100. This machine is really powerful, durable and sophisticated for its price tag. It heats up lightning quick and cooks faster than some other air fryers I’ve tried, is relatively quiet and feels sleek and sturdy. I can see why so many people recommend this one.

The angled control panel is my favorite out of all the ones I’ve used. The 6 quart fits a good amount of food without being too oversized and makes the most sense for cooking a wide range of recipes. I can easily fit in a whole tortilla and pizza into this. Cosori uses a PFAS-free ceramic coating, has 9 different functions: Air Fry, Roast, Bake, Broil, Dehydrate, Frozen, Proof, Reheat, and Keep Warm, and 5 fan settings depending on the mode. They do have a new one with a fully stainless steel interior that’s completely toxin-free. Bottom line: If you’re looking for an air fryer that ticks all the boxes and doesn’t break the bank, Cosori is the best option.

Fritaire Non Toxic Air Fryer rotisserie chicken
I can roast a whole chicken in Fritaire’s full glass air fryer

I tried Fritaire Self Cleaning Non Toxic Air Fryer

Fritaire is a BPA, Teflon, and PFAS-free air fryer that’s made of glass and is truly non toxic. I found this to be the funnest air fryer I’ve used hands down. The tumbling basket makes me feel like I’m running a little restaurant in my home and watching it go rotate is oddly relaxing. It’s got a digital control panel on the lid with pre-set temps for Meat, Fish, Chicken, Fries, Bake, and Dehydrate and a separate rotisserie motor attachment on the side. It is a bit of hassle that I had to find AAA batteries on my own for the rotisserie motor. I love being able to see my food air frying through the transparent bowl both for funsies and for practical reasons. If I notice my food is starting to burn I can quickly stop it or reduce the temp. Fritaire can fit a whole small chicken but it only has one rack so you can’t do multi-level air frying. I found the self-cleaning function worked well and the machine is overall easy to clean.

Fritaire Non Toxic Air Frye BPA free Teflon free

There are some downsides to the Fritaire for me. First, the lid gets extremely hot, so I’m worried the control panel is going to short-circuit eventually. The rotisserie motor feels flimsy and weak, so I’m skeptical of how durable it is. I also don’t like the digital control panel compared to other air fryers I’ve tried. I’d rather see all the functions versus seeing little food icons of meat, fish and fries. Glass bowl air fryers aren’t quite as convenient as basket style ones for quick air frying because I have to take on and off a pretty heavy lid.

Price: $199.99
What I love:
– I can see how my food is cooking and can stop it from burning.
– The basket tumbler and rotisserie function is super fun to use.
– It’s easier to clean than an air fryer oven and Fritaire’s self cleaning function is very convenient.
What I don’t love:
– The lid gets extremely hot and doesn’t feel durable.
– I had to supply my own AAA batteries for the separate rotisserie motor, which feels kinda weak and flimsy.
– It can only fit a small chicken around 3-4lb. Otherwise the legs will touch the dome as it rotates and the motor function won’t work properly.

pfas free air fryer Bella fits anywhere

I Tried Bella 4QT Fits Anywhere Slim Air Fryer

Bella 4QT Slim Air Fryer is such an affordable yet really modern air fryer that’s free of PFAS and harmful materials. This sleek basket style air fryer uses a proprietary ceramic coating called Evergood and is made without any PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, lead, or cadmium. At just under $60 it’s the most stylish, thoughtfully-made basket style air fryer I’ve used for this low low price point. Instead of knobs it has digital controls that I find really responsive to the slightest touch. There’s six presets: air fry, bake, roast, broil, reheat, and dehydrate and it heats up to 400 degrees. I was surprised by how quiet it is and there was no weird smells or overheating. She’s super versatile, heats up quickly and air fries to crispy perfection. The downside with basket style air fryers is I can’t see how my food is doing inside and I’ve occasionally burnt my food. I find the 4QT size to be ideal for two people. Any more and this will feel small. Bella comes in four colors, but the oatmeal blends in the best and looks inconspicuous on my countertop.

Price: $59
What I love: so budget friendly! modern and elegant, very quiet
What I don’t love: basket style doesn’t allow me to see how the food is doing
Other models available: 6QT, Air Fryer Toaster Oven

our place non toxic air fryer oven

I tried Our Place Wonder Oven

My brutally honest opinion of Our Place’s air fryer is that it’s aesthetically pleasing and functional, but it feels kinda flimsy and gimmicky. I do appreciate it’s made without any PTFE (Teflon), PFOA, PFAS, lead and cadmium and is built from premium glass and stainless steel. This is a versatile oven-style air fryer that I’d only recommend for a one or two person household because of how little space is inside. Our Place does now have a Large Wonder Oven which has three levels inside and is good for 4-6 people.

It gave off no weird smells, heats up to temperature almost immediately and offers six different functions: air fry, bake, roast, toast, broil, and reheat. I love the unique steam infusion feature where you add 1-2 tablespoons of water on the top and it circulates the steam so food stays moist without losing flavor. It’s particularly useful to revive old dry bread. Compared to a basket style, I can turn on the oven light to see how my food is crisping up, which is always nice.

I love the retro aesthetic and how light it is, but it does feel “delicate” compared to the heftier ovens I’ve tried. I honestly do not like the analog dials even though I know it fits the retro look. I try to be more careful with not putting anything too heavy inside. I feel that the downside with air fryer ovens are that they don’t feel like a true toaster nor a true air fryer, so there is a bit of a compromise to having all the different functionalities. Overall, for this price point, I expected a more heavy duty, larger oven and feel that Greenpan’s Stainless Steel 9-in-1 Air Fry Oven is a much better option.

Price: $185
What I love: versatile and light, quiet
What I don’t love: feels very delicate, oven style is annoying to clean
Materials: Stainless steel (exterior and wire rack), Chromed steel (wire rack and air fryer basket), aluminum with ceramic coating (bake pan)
Comes with: wire racks, an ultra-slippery nonstick bake pan, an air fryer basket, and a crumb tray
Other models available: Large Wonder Oven, Wonder Oven Pro

The specs:

Dimensions (Exterior)10.6″ 11.5″ W 11.6″ H
Capacity 12.7 Quarts (fits 4 slices of toast or a whole 4.5 lb chicken)
Weight 11.6 lbs

non toxic air fryer Greenpan Bistro 9-in-1 Air Fryer Toaster Oven

I tried Greenpan Bistro 9-in-1 Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Greenpan and Ninja are the best nontoxic stainless steel air fryers in my experience. Their 9-in-1 feels the most on par with my Ninja Foodi Air Fry Oven. Compared to Our Place, this feels like a professional heavy duty appliance. They use a proprietary ceramic nonstick coating derived from sand-based materials and are made without PFAS, PFOA, lead, or cadmium. There’s a few ways Greenpan really stands out if you’re looking for the safest product. First, they own their own factories so they know exactly how their products are being made and what’s going into each part throughout the entire process. Second, their proprietary coating has been independently tested and certified to be safe according to USA Food & Drug Administration, German LFGB, Swiss government, and KTR standards. Legit nontoxic and no bs.

I find their oven style air fryer to be extremely sturdy, spacious, well built and well equipped with no offgassing smell. It has nine different functions: bake, broil, air fry, proof, dehydrate, slow cook, toast, warm, and pizza. I do find that it heats up super quickly in just a few minutes and is able to air fry all sorts of food to crispy perfection. The knobs and LED display are sleek, sophisticated and very easy to use. There’s lots of space inside to cook bigger meals (up to 4 lbs), but it’s also a clunky and heavy appliance. This is the heftiest PFAS-free air fryer I’ve tried to date.  It comes with a stainless steel rack, baking pan, air fry basket, and crumb tray.

Price: $189 on amazon
What I love: completely non toxic, very durable, spacious and works so well
What I don’t love: heavy, clunky and annoying to clean
Other models available: 4.5 QT basket style, 7 QT basket style, Elite Convection Air Fryer Toaster Oven

The specs:

Capacity: Fits a 9″ x 13″ baking pan, 6 slices of toast, a 13″ pizza, or up to 4 lbs of food for air frying
Dimensions: 16.46″ D×15.83″ W×13.78″
Weight: 18.63 lbs
Wattage: 1500 to 1800 watts (depending on the specific retailer)
Maximum Temperature: 450
Functions: Bake, Broil, Air Fry, Proof, Dehydrate, Slow Cook, Toast, Warm, and Pizza.

I tried Big Boss 16Qt Large Glass Air Fryer

The Big Boss Air Fryer is a unique egg-looking chamber air fryer that’s made up of a glass bowl and stainless steel racks. It’s 100% free of Teflon (PTFE) and PFOA non-stick coatings. I’ve found that Big Boss offers amazing value for money for the size, especially when other comparable models go for $300+. It’s just kinda ugly looking and oversized honestly. I do prefer the Fritaire which is also a glass dome air fryer.

I can make the most variety of food with this beast of an air fryer that sorta looks like a mini Big Green Egg, including a whole chicken! It’s got a whopping three racks and 16 QT capacity, has a chamber style look and is transparent all around. As I expected, the food on the top rack cooks faster than the bottom. I do love that I can easily throw in whole potatoes and larger foods and have a 360 degree view of how it’s cooking. This is a great option for family style cooking without the harmful plastics. I find that it heats up extremely quickly, and the knobs are easy to use. One thing to note is there’s no pre-sets and there’s only two knobs for time and temp. Personally, for my home I find it takes up way too much space and would be more suitable for large countertops.

Price: $99.99
What I love: great for big meals and large families, can fit a ton of food, great value for money, multiple levels for cooking
What I don’t love: enormous, only two controls, doesn’t cook evenly on each level
Materials: Glass and stainless steel

Specs:

Capacity: 16 quarts (expands with included stainless steel extender ring)
Power: 1300 Watts
Temperature Range: 180 F to 400 F
Weight: Approx. 10.9 to 15 lbs
Dimensions: 16″ 12.5″ to 13.5″ H

pfas free air fryer nontoxic ceramic aria

I tried Aria Air Fryer (most compact)

The Aria Air Fryer is a basket style air fryer with ceramic parts that are PTFE-free, PFOA-free, and BPA-free. This is the simplest and most compact nontoxic air fryer I’ve tried at 2QT and is ideal for single servings. I find that it heats up to 400° super duper quickly and is super convenient for small and quick meals. It’s dummy-proof and soo simple and easy to use – perfect for people who don’t know how to cook or hate handling complicated appliances. I’ve air fried snacks and desserts and it does a great job at crisping up for every time. I love the retro look and how compact it is – saves up so much space on a smaller countertop. The downside is that it does feel flimsy.

Price: $49
Materials: PTFE-free, PFOA-free, BPA-free ceramic
What I love: so compact and easy to use
What I don’t love: can only handle small snacks and single servings, feels flimsy

The specs:

Capacity: 2 Quarts
Power: 800 watts
Max Temperature: 400°F
Dimensions: Approximately 8″ L × 9.75″ W × 11.75″ H
Weight: 6 lbs
Cooking Functions: Fry, bake, roast, toast, grill, and rehea

Which one did you end up choosing that you love?!?

    1. Andrea Avatar

Some of these I already owned before writing this, but out of the new ones I got I love the Cosori for practicality and Fritaire has been a really “fun” air fryer with the rotisserie and tumbler basket options. Top of the line will always be stainless steel though if you’re a really serious shopper.
