clean vitamin c serum

Best Natural Vitamin C Serum? I tried 30+, these 5 made the cut!

I’ve tried dozens of clean vitamin C serums for the last eight years and am sharing my hand-picked list of the ones that actually work. Most Vitamin C serums arrive ineffective to your doorstep because of how inherently unstable vitamin C is. These are the only ones I’d repurchase over and over again. The best Vitamin C serum is made with stable and strong actives and free from questionable ingredients, parabens, phthalates, artificial dyes and fragrance, and harmful chemicals.

A vitamin C serum is a non-negotiable part of any skincare routine. Hands down, it is one of the best antioxidants to protect skin cells from free radical damage. Besides acting as a protective shield, Vitamin C helps fight dark spots, age spots, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, brighten skin tone, increases collagen production and reduces wrinkles. Simply put, it’s an anti-aging powerhouse. Apply after toner and before moisturizer daily to see results!

Ingredients to avoid

  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) — hormone disruptors absorbed easily through facial skin
  • Synthetic Fragrance/Parfum — leading cause of contact dermatitis and allergic reactions on the face
  • Alcohol Denat — strips the skin barrier, causes dryness and long term sensitivity
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, diazolidinyl urea) — irritating and potentially carcinogenic
  • Phthalates — often hidden inside “fragrance,” linked to hormone disruption
  • Silicones (dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane) — create a film that traps bacteria and prevents skin from breathing
  • Mineral Oil/Petrolatum — clogs pores, blocks absorption of active ingredients
  • Synthetic Dyes — no skin benefit, linked to irritation and sensitivity
  • PEGs (polyethylene glycols) — can be contaminated with carcinogenic byproducts, disrupts skin barrier
  • BHA/BHT — synthetic antioxidants linked to hormone disruption

Types of Vitamin C (natural and synthetic)

There are various forms of Vitamin C used in skincare formulations, each with its own characteristics. Some common forms include:

  • L-Ascorbic Acid: The gold standard! This is the most common and researched form of Vitamin C. Very potent but it can be unstable and may oxidize over time.
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP): stable, gentle form of Vitamin C great for sensitive skin
  • Ascorbyl Palmitate: fat-soluble form of Vitamin C, making it more stable. Often used in combination with other forms of Vitamin C for enhanced stability.
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) water-soluble form of Vitamin C considered more stable than L-Ascorbic Acid and less likely to cause irritation.
  • Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate: stable form of Vitamin C that’s lipid-soluble and is believed to penetrate the skin more easily than some other forms.
  • Ascorbyl Glucoside: very gentle form of vitamin C

For sensitive skin girlies, there are tons of ingredients from nature that are naturally high in vitamin C! If synthetic vitamin C is too strong for you, look for these instead:

  • Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
  • Rosehip Oil
  • Kakadu Plum: Kakadu Plum has one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C among fruits.
  • Camu Camu: An Amazonian fruit that is exceptionally high in Vitamin C.
  • Acerola Cherry Extract

Best Clean Vitamin C Serums

I tried Innbeauty Project Pro C Serum

I was blown away by the formula of Innbeauty Project’s Pro C Serum! It has the highest concentration of actives I’ve seen so far in a serum, at a whopping 30% of the entire formula. It’s an absolute workhorse of a product with 15% Vitamin C of three different types: Liposomal 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Gold-Stabilized L-Ascorbic Acid, & THD (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate). There’s also Ferulic Acid, FGF-2 Growth Factor Peptides, Alpha Arbutin and Tranexamic Acid. On top of that it has a liposomal delivery system for better delivery and absorption. I can absolutely feel this tingling and getting to work right away, which is always a great sign the vitamin C is still stable and active. I’ve had zero irritation. I think the price is so reasonable for what the product has to offer and excellent value for money. This is my summer go-to serum to fight dark spots, sun damage, age spots & hyperpigmentation. I will buy this over and over again.

luzern v15 vitamin c serum

I tried Luzern Laboratories Serum Absolut V15 (Andrea’s fave)

Luzern V15 is hands down the most effective vitamin C serum in luxury clean beauty in my experience. I have used this for years. It’s the closest clean beauty dupe to Skinceuticals C E Ferulic (general consensus not just me!). It’s pretty pricey but you absolutely get what you pay for. It’s packed with 15% Pure Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid), Ferulic Acid, Multi-Mineral Ferment, Hyaluronic Acid, Red Algae Extract, Swiss Alpine Organics, O2 Amplifier. Texturally it feels like a liquid and has no fragrance. My all-time holy grail for clearer, even toned and brighter skin.

I tried Youth To The People 15% Vitamin C + Clean Caffeine Serum

Youth To The People’s Vitamin C serum is a fantastic mid-range vitamin C serum that works well for a reasonable price in my experience. This is a clinical-grade 15% vitamin C serum boosted with clean, plant-derived caffeine from superleafs yerba mate and guayusa to immediately brighten, visibly reduce morning puffiness, and hydrate. I notice brighter skin with more clarity when using this serum daily. I appreciate that It’s properly packaged in a dark glass bottle, which is important for Vitamin C products, and has a thin almost milky consistency. I love that it has:

  • 15% Vitamin C Complex: Three powerful sources of vitamin C: Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD Ascorbate), and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate
  • Yerba Mate + Guayule
  • Passion Fruit
  • Dragon Fruit

I tried Kora Organics Kakadu Plum Vitamin C Serum (sensitive skin!)

This is the gentlest option for sensitive skin in my list. I like Kora Organics’ vitamin C serum because it doesn’t just rely on one synthetic vitamin C source. Instead it combines multiple sources of natural vitamin C like Kakadu Plum, None fruit and Acerola Cherry, and includes a gentle stabilized vitamin C called Ascorbyl Glucoside. I also love that it’s EWG verified, Cosmos Organic certified by Ecocert and is made with over 70% organic ingredients. It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly without feeling heavy or stick and has an uplifting citrus scent.

I tried Marie Veronique Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid

Marie Veronique’s Vitamin C serum is another hill I will die on. This clean, clinical anti-aging skincare line targeted for mature skin makes one of the best vitamin c serums on the market. It’s got a base of green tea leaf infusion with TETRAHEXYLDECYL ASCORBATE, which is an oil-soluble C derivative that converts to ascorbic acid and penetrates to the cell. I love that it contains astaxanthin, a very powerful antioxidant from the carotenoid family that protects against long-wave radiation damage. This feels like a true hydrating serum not an oil and is lightweight and breathable.
