When it came to living a healthier lifestyle, I thought about the easiest ways first. Swapping out my deodorant, using natural skincare, wearing plastic-free workout clothes and non toxic cookware was fun and exciting. Basically, when it came to beauty, fashion and cooking I was a woman on a mission. What’s not as exciting? Mattresses. I was swapping everything I use while awake, but I didn’t think about things I use when I’m not.

Conventional mattresses are one of the most overlooked sources of toxic exposure in the home because you spend 7 to 9 hours every night in direct contact with them, breathing in and potentially absorbing whatever chemicals they’re made with. Some of us (hi it me!) love to bedrot, which means we’re spending even MORE time than just those 8 hours of sleep in bed.

Typical mattresses are loaded with synthetic foams, flame retardants, pesticide-treated cotton, and off-gassing adhesives that have been linked to hormone disruption, respiratory issues, and long term health risks. Even though it’s the last thing on people’s minds, making the switch to an organic mattress is one of the best changes you can make for your overall health and your sleep quality. My furbaby also sleeps on my bed with me, so it’s like getting them a healthier bed too. Two fur one deal! Also, children’s developing bodies are more vulnerable to chemical exposure.

Here’s a deeper look at how the Birch Luxe mattress is constructed. At the bottom it begins with a fiberglass-free fire retardant fiber layer. Then there’s a layer of soft organic latex for Ergonomic contouring and pressure relief followed by a firmer organic latex layer for cradling, responsive support. Then there’s 3 layers of Natural New Zealand wool loft and cushioning. At the top is an organic cotton Euro layer that’s breathable and moisture-wicking.

I preferred getting the Luxe version because it’s a taller mattress with an extra wool layer and plusher looking top layer. Love that it’s 11 inches tall and love the pillow top even more. With their shorter, basic mattress I feel like I would have needed to get an extra mattress topper.

How it feels to sleep on a Birch

I find it to be supportive without feeling too firm and has a cushiony, plush feel with a good amount of bounce. For reference I am a 120 pound female. Obviously, this is not the mattress for someone who needs a very firm mattress and is more for someone who’s happy with medium firmness. Since I started sleeping on my Birch mattress, I feel like I’m able to stay asleep better. I usually don’t have an issue with falling asleep, but I’ve always had the problem of waking up a few times every night for as long as I can remember. What I’ve noticed is fewer random wakeups in the middle of the night.
