Best Non Toxic Saunas (2026 Guide)

After using top rated infrared saunas for years, I’m sharing the best ones that are actually safe. The best non toxic home sauna is made with solid plank untreated wood, low EMF and without particle board, plywood, plastics near heaters, or formaldehyde glues.

For those who want to cut to the chase, Sun Home Saunas is the best non toxic sauna and the only brand that’s fully transparent with independent test results for every part of their cabin, including cabin air, adhesive and EMF.

Why should you trust me: I’m a sauna enthusiast who has been using infrared saunas, blankets and visiting sauna resorts around the world for the last ten years. Be sure to bookmark this post, because I’ll be continuously updating it!

Are Non Toxic Saunas Better?

Yes, creating a wellness retreat inside your home is a lifetime investment, so opting for a healthy option just makes a lot of sense here.

  • Lower toxic exposure: Solid chemical-free wood without formaldehyde-based glues means fewer VOCs off-gassing into the air you’re breathing for 20–45 minutes at high temps. Heat accelerates off-gassing and makes it easier for you to breathe in or absorb.
  • Lower EMF exposure: Verified low-EMF engineering cuts cumulative exposure from sitting inches from heating elements, session after session, for years.
  • Safe cumulative sessions: A sauna is a long-term purchase used repeatedly over years, so exposure is cumulative. You’re sitting in an enclosed box often multiple times a week especially during the cold months (and if during summer I commend you).
  • You can breathe easier with peace of mind for a truly restorative experience

Whether you have a tiny city apartment, backyard or building a wellness retreat, there’s a sauna for you. If you’re overwhelmed by all the options available, I’m sharing which sauna companies are the healthiest and what to check before buying.

Toxins in Saunas

  • Formaldehyde: off-gasses from the synthetic resins used to bind plywood, MDF, and particle board; heat accelerates the release.
  • VOCs (volatile organic compounds): released from stains, varnishes, lacquers, and sealants applied to cheaper wood panels.
  • Phthalates: used to soften plastic components near heating elements or in blanket exteriors; heat can accelerate their release.
  • PVC off-gassing: found in the vinyl exteriors of some lower-cost sauna blankets, as opposed to PU leather alternatives.
  • Chlorinated wood preservatives: sometimes used to treat outdoor sauna wood against rot and pests; can leach or off-gas under heat.
  • Flame retardants: occasionally present in the synthetic fabric or foam layers of budget sauna blankets and tents.
  • EMF and ELF radiation: serious exposure concern given how close you sit to the heating elements for extended periods

One of the most amazing saunas I’ve experienced, ever.

What to Look For

You want a zero off-gassing sauna with no synthetic materials releasing chemicals into the air that you could breathe in.

  • Non toxic wood and construction: Look for solid plank, non-particle board wood like Canadian hemlock, basswood, or poplar without chemical stains, glues, or synthetic sealants, including the floor and roof panel, not just the visible wall. Avoid heavy glues, plywood that release volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
  • Chemical free parts: Check what’s used for the heating elements and adhesives. Avoid fire retardants, vinyl, plastics, or artificial glues near the heating elements. Non toxic sauna brands use water based, formaldehyde free adhesives or skip glue-based seams entirely.
  • Low EMF or Near Zero EMF: Features shielded heating elements to minimize electromagnetic field (EMF) and extremely low frequency (ELF) radiation exposure during close use.
  • Certifications: ETL/ETL-C (electrical safety), RoHS (restricts hazardous substances), and FSC-certified wood sourcing are the main ones to look for. Independent VOC chamber testing (EPA Method TO-15 or similar) is rare but the strongest evidence a brand can offer.
  • Electrical requirements. Most full-cabin infrared saunas need a dedicated 120V/20-amp circuit — not a standard household 15-amp outlet. If your install location doesn’t already have one, budget for an electrician before delivery day.

Types of Nontoxic Saunas

It’s fascinating how saunas go back thousands of years across almost every culture and were a sacred space (the womb of Mother Earth for Native Americans, survival for the Finnish, and healing and childbirthing for many). Today we’ve got some fun options:

  • Traditional sauna: Heats the air around you using rocks or an electric heater, running hot (150–195°F). This is the classic Finnish-style sauna that you can pour water over rocks for steam. Fast heat-up, but the highest temperature in this list.
  • Far infrared sauna: Most common for home saunas and uses panels that emit far-infrared light to heat your body directly rather than heating the air. Runs at a much lower ambient temperature (110–140°F) but you still sweat, since your body itself is being heated.
  • Near infrared sauna: Uses a different, shorter wavelength of infrared light that may penetrate tissue less deeply than far-infrared, but associated with skin and circulation benefits. You’ll typically find these in incandescent bulbs (tons of red light therapy brands now offer these!).
  • Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna: Combines near, mid, and far-infrared in one unit, either through separate emitters or a single panel type engineered to produce multiple wavelengths. The idea is getting the benefits associated with each range in one session rather than picking just one.
  • Hybrid sauna (traditional + infrared): A cabin that includes both a traditional heater with rocks and infrared panels, letting you choose the type of heat per session or blend them.
  • Portable sauna (blanket or tent): A fabric enclosure or wearable blanket using far-infrared heating elements against or near the skin. No cabin, no dedicated space needed, but the heating elements sit much closer to your body, so EMF shielding may matter to you more.
Salus Heat Garner Sauna outdoor budget friendly

SalusHEAT (budget!)

SalusHEAT is by far the most accessible home sauna brand for around a thousand bucks in this list and they have the same non-toxic construction principles as the bigger names, without the markup. Cabinets use solid, knot-free Canadian hemlock with tongue-and-groove construction to minimize glue use, and where adhesive is needed, they use water-based, food-contact-safe wood glue rather than standard construction adhesive. Finish is a zero-VOC water-based varnish or wax oil rather than stain, which they position specifically against competitors who use dyed “redwood” or “blackwood” finishes to hide lower-grade wood. The tradeoff is EMF and material safety results aren’t available online. They’ve got a wide variety of saunas including standard cabin, panorama glass and barrel saunas.

Sun Home Saunas

Sun Home Sauna is verifiably the healthiest sauna on the market and they actually publish specific EMF numbers (0.5 mG, Vitatech-verified) with named independent labs and dates on their site (something no other brand I’ve come across does). They just launched their first indoor traditional sauna Nova that’s built entirely with non-toxic, low VOC materials, solid Canadian cedar throughout, marine-grade stainless steel fasteners, and NO plywood, particleboard, or formaldehyde-based adhesives. It offers an authentic water-on-stones löyly, reaching up to 230°F for a true Finnish steam experience. The outdoor version will launch in 2027. The Eclipse is Sun Home’s flagship indoor sauna, built from non-toxic, low-VOC Canadian hemlock, combines far-infrared and full-spectrum infrared heating with dual red light therapy panels, has EMF readings of around 0.5 milligauss (well below levels typical of many household appliances!). The impressive red light system uses 360 LEDs across dual panels at 660nm and 850nm wavelengths for front-and-back coverage. Tool free assembly using a tool-free panel-locking system, and includes chromotherapy lighting, Bluetooth audio, and app connectivity for remote session control and guided breathwork.

Health Mate Inspire

Our Health Mate sauna has been in the family home for so many years, so we can all confirm it’s held up exceptionally well, still heats up super fast and works without a hitch. Health Mate is an OG in the sauna world (they’ve been around since 1979). They use proprietary Tecoloy heaters, a patented ceramic compound design rather than off-the-shelf carbon panels, and their EMF certification is backed by third-party testing rather than just a marketing claim. Health Mate sauna are made of solid wood, either Canadian Western Red Cedar or mahogany depending on the line, with a 5-stage quality control process and a 5-year warranty covering the power supply, controller, and wood. Heat-up times run fast relative to carbon-panel competitors, and the mid-infrared wavelength from the Tecoloy rods is tuned to penetrate more deeply into tissue. It can get super hot so I recommend wearing a 100% undyed wool sauna hat like Feltforma or Bjorli to protect your head from overheating. l love enhancing my sauna sessions with aromatherapy, crystals and a sauna-safe water bottle to stay hydrated.

Clearlight Sanctuary Infrared Sauna

Clearlight Sanctuary home saunas are carbon infused with ceramic particulates, engineered so the opposing magnetic fields cancel each other out. They’ve undergone testing and independent readings show under 1 mG at the heater surface and effectively near-zero at seated position, which is among the most validated EMF performance in the category. Construction is double-wall tongue-and-groove, available in eco-certified Okoume, mahogany, or basswood, with 8mm tempered glass on the front and ceiling panels. There’s a heater built underneath the wood floor as well, which is a detail that makes a real difference on cold feet during a session. Assembly takes about an hour to an hour and a half with two people, requires no tools beyond a screwdriver and the included Allen wrench, and the Sanctuary 1 fits in tight spaces since it needs only 4 inches of clearance around it.

SaunaSpace FireLight Sauna red light therapy

SaunaSpace FireLight Sauna

SaunaSpace is the most unique sauna in this list and uses organic cotton, kiln-toasted bamboo, and sustainably harvested American basswood, hand-assembled in Columbia, Missouri, with zero plastics or synthetics. instead of carbon or ceramic heating panels, the FireLight sauna uses hand-blown, quartz-stained incandescent bulbs that emit a full-spectrum near-infrared light, similar in concept to sunlight without the UV. Because the heat comes from light hitting your body directly rather than warmed air or panel radiation, the air inside stays relatively cool (100–130°F) even though the bulb surface runs over 370°F. It’s EMF-free rather than just low-EMF, using grounding and shielding as standard, with an optional SilverLining fabric upgrade (35% silver thread woven into organic cotton) that blocks up to 99.99% of external EMF.

Specs:

  • Heat source: Hand-blown FireLight incandescent bulbs (near-infrared, full-spectrum)
  • Materials: Organic cotton, kiln-toasted bamboo, American basswood — no plastics or synthetics

heavenly heat eco infrared sauna

Heavenly Heat Infrared ECO Sauna

Heavenly Heat is your healthiest sauna if you have chemical sensitivities (MCS) or environmental illness, because there’s NO wood glue, no plywood, no paint, no stains. Every sauna is built from solid, kiln-dried FSC-certified Canadian hemlock, assembled with tongue-and-groove joinery and zero adhesives anywhere in the structure. Even the Bluetooth speakers sit behind wooden covers instead of plastic, which is a small detail but consistent with how thoroughly they’ve stripped synthetic materials out of the build. The tradeoff for that material purity is less perks like no chromotherapy, no touchscreen, no app control, no outdoor models, and a narrower size range (1- and 2-person only) than brands like Clearlight or Sunlighten. What you get instead is one of the more rigorously documented EMF/ELF profiles in the category and a heat-up time on the faster end for a far-infrared cabin.

Specs:

  • Wood: 100% FSC-certified Canadian hemlock (or Western red cedar/poplar on some models) — no plywood, glue, paint, or stains
  • Heater: Far-infrared ceramic, ultra-low EMF
  • EMF: Under 2 mG; ELF under 7 V/m (brand-reported)
  • Electrical: Standard 15A household circuit, no special wiring
  • Heat-up time: ~12–15 minutes (compact ECO model)
  • Capacity: 1 or 2 person only
  • Price: $4,887–$5,600

Peak Saunas

Peak Saunas is built with solid western red cedar throughout which naturally resists moisture and warping and holds up better over years. Every sauna also comes with a full red-light therapy wall built in, which is usually a $1,799+ add-on with other brands. It runs on its own controls, separate from the heat, so you can do a red-light session without cranking the temperature if that’s all you want that day. For EMF, they test the whole assembled sauna at actual seating distance rather than just testing an isolated heater panel — which matters, because some brands get a nice low number by only testing the panel itself, not what you’d actually be exposed to sitting inside. The heater reaches a genuine 150°F, and most people report it heating up in 10–15 minutes.

Specs:

  • Wood: Western red cedar
  • Heater: Full-spectrum infrared, near-zero EMF (tested at seating distance, not just the panel)
  • Red light: Built-in XL panel, 8 wavelengths, controlled separately from heat
  • Irradiance: 175 mW/cm² at 6″, 107 mW/cm² at 12″, 80 mW/cm² at 24″
  • Electrical: 120V/20A, 2,050W — needs a dedicated 20A circuit
  • Assembly: 60–90 min, 2 people, panels clip together, minimal tools
  • Controls: Touchscreen (inside and out) + WiFi app
  • Warranty: Lifetime, with lifetime U.S.-based support

SaunaRay Far Infrared Sauna

SaunaRay builds each sauna from solid Ontario basswood, cut thick enough that the entire cabin assembles with a groove-and-buckle system so there’s NO adhesives at all. There’s no plywood anywhere, including the roof and floor, no plastic or fiberglass in the heaters, no chemical fire retardants, and no halogen or fluorescent lighting inside. They use incandescent only, the heaters are solid ceramic far-infrared, the stainless steel and tempered glass components are sourced and finished locally in Ontario, with a hand-rubbed Canadian beeswax coating as the only exterior finish. SaunaRay is a small operation by design and only build 500 units per year, each handcrafted in their own factory rather than mass-produced overseas and rebranded. EMF measures at 0.2 milliGauss.

Specs:

  • Wood: Solid Ontario basswood, thick-plank, glue-free groove-and-buckle assembly
  • Heater: Solid ceramic far-infrared
  • EMF: 0.2 mG (independently claimed lowest in category, up to 80x lower than common brands)
  • Finish: Hand-rubbed Canadian beeswax (exterior only, no stains/varnish)
  • Lighting: Incandescent only — no halogen or fluorescent
  • Electrical: 2-person plugs into standard outlet; 3-person needs 220V
  • Assembly: 4 panels, basic tools, ~45 min reported by owners
  • Warranty: Lifetime on cabinet and heaters; 5 years on digital controller
  • Production: Handcrafted in Collingwood, Ontario — capped at 500 units/year
  • Price: $3,900–$5,500 for a 2 person unit
SunStream Evolve Infrared Sauna

SunStream Evolve 360 Infrared Sauna

SunStream builds their Evolve line from a single wood type — basswood — throughout the entire cabin, with no plywood or treated timber anywhere in the structure, and they use a food-safe, FDA-approved wood glue instead of standard construction adhesive. They’ve been at this a while too: SunStream introduced low-EMF heaters back in 2010 and rolled out an upgraded EHS heater system in 2020 that cancels out both magnetic and electric fields, not just the magnetic side most brands focus on. The heaters run 360 degrees around you, including a panel mounted right on the glass door, so you’re getting infrared from every direction rather than just the walls behind you — and they run with about 25% more power than a typical 2-person sauna, so sessions heat up faster and hit a heavier sweat. EMF averages under 1.0 mG and ELF runs 5–20 V/m, both independently confirmed and among the lowest published numbers of any brand in this guide.

Portable Sauna Blankets I’ve Tried

Portable infrared blankets and tents put the heating elements in direct, sustained contact with your skin rather than a few feet away. Cheaper blankets have been found in independent testing to produce magnetic field readings over 100 mG at contact points while you want the sub-5 mG range.

HigherDOSE is the most established name in the infrared sauna blanket space and I’ve had mine for four years. I have a full video review. The blanket layers amethyst, tourmaline, clay, and charcoal, wrapped in a PU leather exterior rather than PVC, which sidesteps a common off-gassing issue in cheaper competitors. Independent EMF testing measures 2–5 mG at body contact — low for the category — and it’s passed VOC and California Prop 65 testing. This gets a really good sweat going and does have a bit of a smell but isn’t too distracting. The highest setting is a little too hot for me so I usually have it just slightly below that. It has:

  • A layer for far infrared heat and low EMF
  • Amethyst and Tourmaline layers to deepen the effects of the far infrared heat
  • Charcoal, clay and magnetic layers
    • Charcoal binds to pollutants and helps body flush out impurities
    • Clay emits negative ions and balances the heat
    • Grounding, medical-grade magnetic strip and improves blood flow and circulation
  • New zipper has replaced the Velcro for easier use

If you’re worried about high EMF radiation (electromagnetic field waves given off by electronic devices) from far-infrared light, HigherDOSE Infrared Sauna Blanket uses low level EMF and ELF (Extremely Low Frequency) currents for safe usage.

higher dose sauna blanket portable
portable but still a massive thing to lug around

Specs:

  • Exterior: PU leather (avoids PVC off-gassing)
  • Layers: Amethyst, tourmaline, clay, charcoal, medical-grade magnetic layer
  • EMF: 2–5 mG at body contact (independently tested)
  • Certifications: ETL certified; passed VOC and CA Prop 65 testing
  • Preheat time: ~10 minutes
  • Heat settings: 1–8, with 30–40 min sessions typical at mid-to-upper range
  • Price: $499

Heat Healer skips the PU “leather” exterior most competing blankets use in favor of an amide fabric — the same fiber family used in astronaut spacesuits and firefighter gear for its heat resistance — and it’s been independently tested against roughly 100–200 common toxic substances by SGS, the Swiss certification body. Underneath the fabric sits a layer of natural jade and tourmaline stones in a mesh sheath, plus a nichrome heating element generating far infrared in the 8,000–10,000nm range, and a copper Faraday shielding layer built specifically to block EMF rather than just minimize it. It has a zero EMF reading, not just “low,” backed by the grounded copper shielding, and an electric field about 20 times below the household appliance limit. Note that it doesn’t lower body voltage the way full grounding is supposed to.

Specs:

  • Exterior: SGS-certified toxin-safe amide fabric (not PU leather)
  • Waterproof layer: SGS-certified toxin-safe PVC
  • Stones: Natural jade and tourmaline (96 stones)
  • Heating element: Nichrome, far infrared 8,000–10,000nm
  • EMF: Claimed zero (copper Faraday shielding); independent testing has found some measurable electrical EMF in use
  • Electric field: ~20x below household appliance limit (brand-reported)
  • Size: 75″ long, 69″ circumference in use — fits up to 6’6″/300 lbs
  • Max temp: 176°F (80°C)
  • Controls: Handheld unit, degree/minute precision
  • Warranty: 2–3 years depending on source
  • Weight: 24 lbs
  • Price: $648 (on sale for $478)
sauna blanket sun home infrared

Sun Home’s Infrared Sauna Blanket doesn’t have charcoal, clay or crystal inside but I feel like it’s better made than Higher Dose and has the lowest EMF readings out of any blanket I’ve tried. Sun Home keeps it simpler with a non-toxic, low-VOC, waterproof polyurethane exterior. Heat range runs 95–167°F, controlled with simple climate and timer dials rather than anything overly complicated, and a zipper closure keeps the heat locked in once you’re inside. It heats up relatively quickly and I always get a good sweat session by using it. The velcro that goes from top to bottom is annoying to open once closed and I would prefer a zipper. Weak hands problems! Overall, a very solid pick for a healthy sauna. blanket and for a reasonable price too.
