non toxic brow pencils

My Fave Non-Toxic Brow Gels & Pencils (before & after)

If you’re looking for a thorough comparison of the best non-toxic and clean brow products, including pencils, gels, powder and pomades, I got you covered! I was blessed with mankind’s worst brows so I’ve tested soooo many natural brow products over the years and have found what works best for me and what doesn’t. Keep reading for my favorites and what I love and don’t love about each of them!

How to find the best non-toxic brow product for YOU!

First, pick the applicator method: pencil, gel, powder or pomade. They each have their own purpose, so it depends on what you’re looking to achieve at the end of the day.

For instance, some people prefer a soft, natural look while others prefer a bold brow. Or some only need to fill in a few sparse areas, while others want to mimic individual hairs.

Brow Pencils are super convenient and allow for the most precision in my experience but need more work to make them look natural. My ideal clean brow product is a retractable pencil (not the kind you have to shave!).

Brow Gels are very no-fuss, help keep individual hairs in place, give that wet look effect and are great for general filling of sparse areas quickly.

Brow Powders give a natural matte look to brows. They require a separate brush to apply.

Brow Pomades have the best lasting power and are excellent at keeping brow hairs in place for long periods of time, especially if you have unruly brows! They also require a separate brush to apply. They’re great for oily skin, hot climates, and long days!

7 Clean Brow Products Compared with My Before and After

I Tried Jones Road Beauty The Brow Gel (great for a natural look!)

This is a fantastic, high-performance gel that looks soooo natural on my dark brows and one of the non-toxic brow products I reach for the most. The spoolie comes out with a good amount of product, not too much and not too little and applies easily. The brunette shade isn’t overpowering nor is it too warm or too cool and is just the perfect tone honestly. It keeps my brows in place with a solid yet flexible hold throughout the day and gives me great coverage. It just took me a little time to get the hang of using just the right amount for my brows!

jane iredale brown pencil before and after

I Tried Jane Iredale PureBrow Brow Pencil (great for structured brows)

This is one of my favorite clean brow pencils because of how practical and high performance it is. It’s got a tear drop shape tip to better outline and define brows with precision and has a long wear formula that’s less prone to smudging. I looove how smoothly this glides on and easily blends! And every brown pencil should be retractable like Jane Iredale’s. It’s frikkin annoying having to use a sharpener and throwing away the shavings.

Best for: outlining, filling in, shaping

plume natural brow pomade before and after

I Tried Plume Nourish & Define Brow Pomade (helps with growth)

Plume makes some of the cleanest, healthiest natural brow products on the market. Their luxury brow pomade not only does everything a brow product should do, but also helps grow thicker, fuller brows with powerful natural ingredients like Coleus Forskohlii Root Oil, Organic Castor Oil and Goosberry Extract that aren’t usually found in brow products. The waxy smudge-proof formula sticks to my hairs and skin super well and keeps them put throughout the day. Ashy Daybreak is such a natural tone that fills in my dark as the night brows without over-darkening them.

inika organic brow pencil before after

I Tried Inika Organic Brow Pencil (cleanest formula)

This is a super clean brow pencil that works so well! Inika’s brow pencil has got a creamy formula that glides on and blends sooo easily to create any shape I want. The only problem is they’ve only got three shades and the regular brunette shade has warm undertones, which does not look natural on me. As far as ingredients go, it does not get any cleaner as Inika is at the apex of ingredient standards in the clean makeup world.

Best for: defining, filling in, shaping

honest beauty clean brow gel before and after

I Tried Honest Beauty Honestly Healthy Brow Gel (Budget!)

Once I figured out how to best use Honest Beauty’s brow gel I found the pigment power to be impressive and lasting. This could be an option for you if you’re on a tight budget, but it’s not as sophisticated as the other luxury options in this list.

When I first used it I thought to myself “is there just no product in this at all?!” Nothing would come out onto the spoolie. So the trick I found was to remove the stopper, the small rubbery thing. Once that was pulled out toooons of product would get onto the spoolie. So then it becomes the opposite issue of not getting too much product.

I find this decent at filling in brows but would not rely on it for defining or outlining them. The spoolie is very thin but it’s also quite flimsy so being gentle is key.

Price: $14.99
Best for: filling in
Shades available (6): Clear, Blonde, Warm Auburn, Soft Black, Neutral Brown, Warm Brown
Staying power: Medium

I Tried Lily Lolo Eyebrow Duo (Budget!)

Another really great budget-friendly natural brow product that’s been a longtime fave of mine is Lily Lolo’s Eyebrow Duo. This is a wax and pressed powder duo brow product that’s 100% natural and squeaky clean! It’s formulated to be smudge-proof AND water-resistant plus it comes with a mirror so it’s super useful when touching up brows on the go! The wax allows me to keep my brows in place aaand it makes the powder last longer.

jones road beauty clean brow pencil before and after

I Tried Jones Road Beauty The Brow Pencil

I found Jones Road’s brow pencil to be great for filling in bare patches but not ideal for precision strokes. It’s got a waxy formula to help with adding fullness, so don’t expect soft and creamy! One thing I do appreciate is the base of the formula being castor seed oil. But I have an issue with the use of Nylon 66 as an ingredient. I also find having to frequently sharpen it to be super annoying. I do find the tone to be very natural looking!

I am looking for a gel or tube of wax that I can apply over my nano brows morning and night to create a barrier from face cream or retinol applied to the forehead. Would the Honest Beauty Honestly Healthy Brow Gel work for this?

If not, is there a product you would suggest? It would have to be pure so as not to degrade the nano brow.
    Thank you!

Hi Carol! I guess it depends on how strong of a barrier you need? Are you looking for something as hefty as vaseline or do you just need a super light coating? Honest beauty’s brow gel will just gently coat the brow hairs. Otherwise I’d suggest something similar to vaseline’s consistency like Badger Balm.
