I’ve tested over 50 mineral face sunscreens and SPF moisturizers for the last decade, and I’ve only found four that are worth buying. The best face sunscreen is made with plant goodness, has no white cast, isn’t heavy or greasy, and is free of harmful toxins or questionable ingredients.

Criteria to be Best of the Best
My top all-time fave sunscreens pass all the criteria below. If we share the same criteria, you’ll find something you like here.
- Clean ingredients and mineral non-nano zinc oxide
- Functions as a true face moisturizer and SPF in one
- No white cast or chalkiness
- Doesn’t feel heavy, thick, or greasy (no sitting on top of your skin sensation)
- Works for reapplication throughout the day (you need to re-apply SPF every 2 hours when you’re outside!)
- Broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection of course
These are all mineral based non-toxic sunscreens for face and do not contain: avobenzone, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, padimate O, or sulisobenzone.
In June 2026, for the first time in 20 years, the FDA approved bemotrizinol for use in sunscreens sold in the U.S., adding it to the agency’s list of active ingredients recognized as safe and effective. Bemotrizinol is a photostable UV filter that shields skin from both UVB and UVA rays.
The safest UV filter currently is mineral zinc oxide, but I will update this post with new findings and products IF they make the cut.

Emma Lewisham SPF 50 Mineral Face Cream
My top pick for the absolute best SPF moisturizer sunscreen for face is Emma Lewisham’s SPF 50 Mineral Face Cream. The reason this beats top contenders like Le Prunier Plumscreen is it’s more sophisticated, has certifications and provides a higher SPF 50 that’s actually been clinically tested. Overall, it wins for the most elegant face sunscreen I’ve ever tried, hands down. It’s a true anti-aging moisturizer with SPF and has a silky light feel, beautiful finish, and zero white cast. This has a whopping 20% zinc oxide formula that’s clinically tested to prove the SPF 50 claim, mineral, natural, clean and non-toxic, while remaining extremely breathable.
There’s zero sitting on top of your skin feeling. It stands out from other popular top face sunscreens because of its certifications and advanced anti-aging formula of a biopeptide, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, niacinamide, and Saccharide Isomerate to support collagen, glycosaminoglycan synthesis and wrinkle fighting. Emma Lewisham’s is the only SPF moisturizer proven by dermatological testing to be safe for sensitive skin and tested to achieve SPF 50 according to the AS/NZS SPF standard 2604 which is based on the International Standards ISO 24443 & ISO 24444.
SPF 50 Mineral Face Cream is one of the newest face sunscreens to hit the market and is LEAGUES above soo many others I’ve tried and tossed. I invite anyone who’s extremely picky about their face sunscreen to try this and find anything they don’t like about it. It’s also the only refillable anti-aging SPF moisturizer available. If you don’t care about aesthetics, you can just use the refill container on its own without the original packaging and save money.
Price: $62 for 1.69 oz | $55 for refill
Finish: Natural hydrated
SPF: 100% mineral / 20% zinc oxide

Le Prunier Plumscreen SPF 31
Le Prunier’s Plumscreen is a very close contender to my top pick and is also a supremely elegant do-it-all face sunscreen that’s a SPF moisturizer, primer and skincare treatment in one. Plumscreen is a truly clean, natural sunscreen and is allergy tested, clinically tested, dermatologically tested, pediatrician tested, Hawaii Reef Compliant, Vegan, Cruelty-free, and PETA certified. It provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB/HEV sun protection, great hydration and has Zonaria Tournefortii Extract, Plum extract and Plum Oil.
This has the lightest most breathable formula for a face sunscreen I’ve tried, ever, and is non-comedogenic, safe for sensitive skin and totally free of essential oils, parabens, fragrance, sulfates and anything questionable. There IS a subtle marzipany oat scent coming from the plum oil. It has less than 5% non-nano zinc oxide in it (compared to Emma Lewisham’s 20% zinc oxide content) which is how it achieves that totally weightless feel. It doesn’t take my top spot because of the lower SPF 31, though theirs has been clinically tested by FDA registered and ISO certified labs and it’s the most expensive SPF moisturizer out of my faves.
Price: $80 for 2 oz
Finish: Natural
SPF: 100% mineral / 4.7% Non-Nano Zinc Oxide

Saint Jane Beauty Luxury Sun Ritual SPF 30
Saint Jane Beauty Luxury Sun Ritual SPF 30 is affordable luxury and ticks all the boxes of serving as an SPF moisturizer, face sunscreen, and blurring mattifying primer in one – all for under $40. This feels velvety light, hydrating and is filled with antioxidant rich plant botanicals like Green Tea, Hibiscus, Jasmine and Desert Rose and is the best dupe to the old COOLA Matte Tinted BB Cream. I love the natural, matte finish it leaves and it is THE best sunscreen primer under makeup. No having to use two separate products for sunscreen and primer under makeup. The performance, feel and look of this mineral face sunscreen is amazing. My only gripe is it also contains phenoxyethanol and dimethicone.
Price: $38 for 1.7 oz
Finish: Matte Natural

Clearstem YOUARESUNSHINE SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen (Best for Acne!)
Clearstem’s SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen is the best face sunscreen for acne and the best option in my list if you need something resistant to sweat and won’t break you out. It’s got a bit more grippiness to it than the other weightless SPF moisturizers in my list and is great if you’re acne prone, going to be working out or doing any sweaty activities. The clean, mineral formula has a proper amount of 21% zinc oxide for SPF 50 and is completely non-comedogenic, safe for sensitive skin and rosacea, paraben free and dermatologically tested. I love that it does NOT skimp out on skin-nourishing and antioxidant-rich botanicals and has Rosemary, Green Tea, Rosemary Leaf, Horse Chestnut, Centella Asiatica and olive extracts. There’s a slight tint to it that means no white cast and a blurring primer effect with a very natural finish that I find leans matte on my dry skin. On oily skin it will probably look like a natural finish.
Price: $42 for 2 oz
Finish: Natural
