I tried the top rated organic mattress toppers over the last seven years and I’m sharing the best ones. The best non toxic mattress topper is made with certified organic latex, wool, or cotton, and without any questionable or harmful materials, memory foam, polyurethane, synthetic flame retardants, or fiberglass.

For those who want to cut to the chase, the absolute best non toxic mattress topper overall is My Green Mattress, the best mattress topper for side sleepers is the 3 inch Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Topper, the best for back pain is Soaring Heart Organic Latex and Wool Mattress Topper, and the least toxic smart topper is Perfectly snug.
Here’s what you need to know about non toxic mattress toppers from my seven years of experience using them:
- Latex is the standard material for an organic topper but it’s not for everyone and has quite a bit of push back.
- If an organic latex mattress topper is too firm for you, look for one that includes wool, because wool softens the bouncy feel of latex and adds more pressure relief.
- If you specifically have hip pain, you need a plush yet supportive topper, like a certified non toxic memory foam topper that molds to and cradles you but still allows you to shift and move easily without sinking in too far.
My testing method: I personally tested each of these mattress toppers and slept on them myself, many for years, so I know how they actually feel and compare to each other.

Why Use an Organic Mattress Topper
- An affordable way to make your current mattress healthier: Ta topper costs a fraction of a new mattress while still making a meaningful difference to the quality of your sleep.
- Non-toxic barrier: it sits between you and a conventional mattress, reducing direct skin contact with synthetic foams, flame retardants, and off-gassing materials in an older or lower-quality mattress.
- Extends the life of your current mattress: toppers can revive a mattress that’s starting to sag or feel worn without requiring a full replacement.
- Adjustable firmness and feel: lets you soften a mattress that’s too firm (or add support to one that’s too soft) without committing to buying a whole new bed.
- Better temperature regulation: natural materials like organic wool and latex breathe and wick moisture, which can help with sleeping hot.
- Added pressure relief: a good topper cushions hips and shoulders, which can ease joint pain and improve sleep quality for side sleepers especially.
- Easy to test and swap: since it’s a much smaller investment than a mattress, it’s lower-risk to try out a new material or firmness level before deciding on anything bigger.

How to Choose a Non-Toxic Mattress Topper
Here’s what you want to look for when picking the right mattress topper for YOU.
1. Material Type
Organic Latex (Dunlop)
The gold standard. GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex is naturally antimicrobial and dust-mite resistant, and it holds its shape for a decade or more without breaking down like foam.
Organic Wool
Naturally flame-resistant with zero added chemicals, wool regulates temperature season to season and wicks moisture, so it sleeps warm in winter and cool in summer.
Talalay Latex
Processed with a vacuum-sealed, flash-freeze method for a softer, more consistent feel than Dunlop. Usually not certified organic, and it breaks down a bit faster over time.
Alpaca Wool
Similar breathability and temperature regulation to sheep’s wool, with naturally hypoallergenic fibers that resist dust mites. Typically pricier and harder to find in bulk.
Cotton Batting
A simple, hypoallergenic quilted layer that adds softness and breathability, but not much pressure relief or support on its own.
2. Thickness
Toppers typically run anywhere from 1 inch (a light refresh) up to 4 inches (a near-mattress feel). Go thicker if your current mattress is firm or aging and needs real pressure relief — go thinner if you just want to freshen up the feel or add a bit of breathability.
3. Firmness and Feel
- Organic Latex (Dunlop): Firmer and more supportive, springs back quickly.
- Talalay Latex: Softer and more plush, with a bit less durability.
- Wool: Adds a soft, breathable top layer without much added support.
- Whatever you choose: Match firmness to your sleep position — side sleepers usually want something softer, back and stomach sleepers usually want something firmer.
Quick Guide to Mattress Topper Certifications
- GOLS Certified: Global Organic Latex Standard — verifies at least 95% certified organic raw material in the latex.
- GOTS Certified: Global Organic Textile Standard — covers the organic cotton or wool used in covers and batting.
- MADE SAFE: Screens the finished product against thousands of chemicals of concern, not just raw materials.
- GREENGUARD Gold: Certifies low chemical emissions, an important marker for off-gassing.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Independently tested for harmful substances in the finished textile.

I tried My Green Mattress Organic Latex Topper (budget!)
My Green Mattress is my number one recommendation for an affordable organic mattress topper that’s truly non toxic for chemically sensitive people. After testing toppers for seven years, I’ve found that they offer the best combination of quality and affordability for a far lower price than Happsy and better craftsmanship than Avocado. It’s entirely certified organic and made of 2 inches of 100% GOLS certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified Dunlop late in a removable, machine-washable GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. I find it to feel buoyant and supportive and love that it doesn’t contain any toxins, VOCs, polyurethane foams, or fiberglass. It adds a wonderful pillowy oomph of plushness, doesn’t move around and stays put underneath my fitted sheet and I sleep deeply using this.
There’s only one thickness and firmness option, but it adds a comfortable layer to any mattress and makes a difference. I’ve also used their organic sheets for a long time and can confirm their quality consistently blows some of the bigger brands out of the water. There was zero off gassing smells when I unboxed it yay. The removable cover is such a nice touch that not every company offers (note that removable mattress covers can only be spot cleaned using gentle laundry products).

Specs:
- Price: $299 for Queen
- Material: GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, removable GOTS-certified organic cotton cover
- Thickness: 2″
- Firmness: Plush
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX certified; 365-night trial, 5-year warranty

I tried the Happsy Organic Mattress Topper
Happy’s organic mattress topper was the first one I ever used seven years ago, used it for many years and I still think it’s one of the best in the non toxic mattress industry. It’s made with GOLS-certified organic latex wrapped in GOTS-certified organic cotton, with zero memory foam, polyurethane, or synthetic fill anywhere in it. There’s no coating to break down and no synthetic flame retardant chemistry. I love how comfy and plush this one is, plus it’s beautifully constructed. It looks fancy without trying to be fancy, and just adds a true pillow-top layer of comfort without any of the harmful toxins and off-gassing smell you get from cheaper foam toppers. This is a great entry point if you’re testing out organic bedding for the first time and don’t want to commit to a full mattress replacement yet. It’s on the thinner side at 2 inches, so don’t expect a dramatic transformation if your mattress is already very firm, but it WILL definitely add a soft cloud like feeling with an ever so subtle sinking in sensation.
Specs:
- Price: $399 for queen
- Material: GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, no polyurethane foam or animal-based materials
- Thickness: 2″
- Firmness: Plush
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, and GREENGUARD Gold certified

I tried the Avocado Eco Organic Mattress Topper
Avocado’s mattress topper is the only one in this list that’s vegan certified, GOTS organic certified, GOLS latex, OEKO-TEX certified, EWG Verified, and MADE SAFE certified. It’s also the most customizable in the organic mattress game with two thicknesses and multiple firmness levels. It’s made with GOLS-certified organic Dunlop or plusher Talalay latex, wrapped in a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover and wool — no synthetic fill, no foam, nothing to off-gas. I went with the 2 inch version and I find that it’s well made and very comfy, but if you want more plushness or you’re a side sleeper go with the 3 inch. I also had a friend with a firmer, older mattress test this to provide the most comprehensive review possible (plus my house can’t fit anymore!), and she said it completely transformed her sleep but she had never used a topper before. So this one really depends on what you’re starting with — if your current mattress runs firm, this is the plush upgrade you want; if it’s already soft, size down to the 2″ medium instead.

Specs:
- Price: $339 for queen (varies by thickness)
- Material: GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex or FSC-certified Talalay latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool cover
- Thickness: 2″, 3″
- Firmness: Medium or plush
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX certified; B Corp and Climate Neutral certified company

I tried the Soaring Heart Organic Wool and Latex Topper
Soaring Heart’s topper is the most expensive and thickest organic mattress topper I’ve tried ever, and it’s the only one that completely transformed the way my mattress felt. I’ve had their organic latex and wool topper for three years and it’s held up exceptionally well over time. Of course I’m not saying you need the thickest, but just a unique detail I wanted to point out. It’s like a half mattress half topper hybrid, and can legitimately double as an emergency floor mattress or futon mattress (came in clutch when I needed a makeshift floor mattress for a guest). It’s made of 2 inches of 100% organic, synthetic-free Dunlop latex hand-wrapped in a full inch of organic wool. There’s no chemical-based foam and no synthetic fire retardants anywhere in the construction. This one has gorgeous handmade construction and details and you can immediately tell it’s not mass produced in a factory like many of the big box mattress brands.

I get asked all the time about my Soaring Heart organic comforter which goes to show how their superior craftsmanship is noticeable even through the camera. The hand-tufting keeps the wool layer from shifting or clumping over time. I find the topper breathes and regulates temperature well, staying cool in summer and warm in winter. Because of the artisan craftsmanship and made to order nature, I noticed their production will take quite a bit longer than other mass market brands I mentioned, so it’s not ideal if you need something asap. Soaring Heart offers four topper types: an organic latex, wool, lamb fleece or latex-wool.
Specs:
- Price: starts from $1,045 for Organic Latex Topper
- Material: 100% organic, synthetic-free Dunlop latex core, hand-tufted organic wool wrap, organic cotton
- Thickness: 2″ latex + 1″ wool
- Firmness: Medium-plush (latex-supported)
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: Certified organic materials throughout; no chemical foam or synthetic fire retardants
- Compatibility note: Requires a slat-style bed frame, not a traditional box spring

I tried the Birch Organic Mattress Topper
Birch is the thinnest, most no-frills non toxic mattress topper I’ve used. To be brutally honest, I found this a tad underwhelming compared to their mattresses. Birch’s topper layers organic wool with GOLS-certified organic Talalay latex, all wrapped in a GOTS-certified organic cotton cover. Like Happsy there’s no variety of options to choose from and it’s got a single 2-inch thickness with one firmness level. I’m mostly a side sleeper, and this one felt okay – enough body contouring for some pressure relief without that sinking in or “stuck in foam” feeling. There are no corner straps, so you have to tuck your sheets in tight or it might shift around under you. I have Birch’s luxe mattress too which has already got a very plush top and I honestly don’t think you need a mattress topper if your mattress is already pretty plush, but using one did make a noticeable difference. If you need a super plush topper or you’re a side sleeper then I would skip Birch because it’s on the thin side compared to other non toxic toppers.

Specs:
- Price: $426 (queen)
- Material: GOLS-certified organic Talalay latex, organic wool layer, GOTS-certified organic cotton cover
- Thickness: 2″
- Firmness: Plush
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: GREENGUARD Gold certified, free of polyurethane foam, fiberglass, pesticides, and formaldehyde

I tried the Naturepedic Box-Stitched Organic Latex Topper
Naturepedic’s Box Stitched organic topper is certified by GOTS, GOLS, MADE SAFE, and GREENGUARD Gold and has 3 inches of GOTS-certified organic latex wrapped in organic cotton percale. There’s no foam, no synthetic fill, NO mystery materials. Like Soaring Heart’s this one is pretty heavy- I needed a second person to help me move the king size, but the box-stitched construction is worth the weight, since it keeps the latex fill evenly distributed instead of bunching up in the middle when two people are sharing a bed. It’s also just beautiful to look at and sleep on — soft, plush, clearly built with care and goes well with my EOS Classic Mattress. It only comes in this one thick, plush option. If you’re wanting something very thick and substantial Naturepedic’s Box Stitched topper is the best combination of value for money, quality and certifications in my experience. It feels like you’re sleeping on a pillow and is so supportive yet plush.
Specs:
- Price: $749 for queen ($599.20 during Labor Day)
- Material: GOTS-certified organic latex, organic cotton percale cover
- Thickness: 3″
- Firmness: Plush
- Temperature regulating: Yes
- Testing: GOTS certified, GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX certified

I tried Perfectly Snug Smart Topper (Cooling and Heating)
Thanks to Eight Sleep, smart toppers are all the rage now, and Perfectly Snug is the least toxic cooling mattress topper on the market, so I’m sharing my brutally honest review. Perfectly Snug is a cooling and heating electronic topper that’s healthier than Eight Sleep, Chilipad and Orion and they’re the only smart topper with real third-party certification. The memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s made without ozone depleters, certain flame retardants (PBDEs), mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and that it meets emissions limits for indoor air quality. I love that NO subscription required unlike Eight Sleep. For cooling, since Perfectly Snug uses a fan instead of water, it’s not going to get as cold though. It’s a 2-inch active temperature-regulation layer that sits on top of your existing mattress and uses built-in sensors to automatically adjust cooling and heating throughout the night, keeping you at your ideal sleep temperature without any manual fiddling in the wee hours of the night or waking up in the morning drenched in sweat. It offers dual-zone control, which in layman’s terms means you can customize each side so you and a partner can set a completely different temperature on your own side of the bed. SO useful if you’re fed up with your husband running hot while you run cold. This will save marriages!

The thing is I’m so used to the feeling of organic latex underneath me that foam and other materials feel strange to me. I’ll still continue to use this through the winter because I love that, unlike a typical heating pad, the heat level changes to adapt to your body temp throughout the night, but I think it would require a thicker fitted sheet. Also, if I didn’t already own a Hatch Sleep clock that tracks my sleep, I would have wanted this topper to offer this.

Love that it’s got a Cold Burst mode for instant relief during a hot flash or a rough night, a Preheating and Hot Burst option for cold sleepers who want a warm bed waiting for them, and even a dedicated foot heater (mine are freezing throughout winter!). It can be run manually by touch through your fitted sheet, or controlled more precisely through the free app (very basic app, nothing advanced!). For hot summer nights I did find that the highest power setting for cooling is loud, but if you need white noise while sleeping this is actually an amazing white noise machine! I personally use my OZLO sleep buds at night so I’m immune to any noise. It’s also only blowing the air that’s already in the room, so to help it get colder I put an iced water bottle on top. I’ll update with how it holds up over the winter so bookmark this post.
Specs:
- Price: $1,999 for Queen ($1,699 during Labor Day)
- Material: CertiPUR-US memory foam, polyester performance-fabric cover, proprietary 3D mesh with embedded temperature sensors and airflow channels; requires electrical power
- Thickness: 2″
- Temperature regulating: Yes, active, powered cooling and heating customizable by level/day/hour with optional app
