COOLA is a clean sunscreen brand that uses at least 70% certified organic ingredients with a Farm to Face approach. COOLA is widely sold at ULTA stores and has a large array of both mineral and chemical sunscreens in fragrance free and scented options to suit all preferences. While COOLA does use a very high percentage of organic ingredients, one thing to note is many of their products use chemical UV filters. But, COOLA’s luxe and high performance products are undoubtedly convenient and very easily accessible thanks to ULTA. If you’re not sure you’ll like a product, you can always head over to your nearest ULTA store and try out their tester products. I’m sharing the best and worst COOLA sunscreen products in this COOLA review.
Note that COOLA is now owned by SC Johnson. They sold a majority stake to consumer goods giant SC Johnson back in 2019. That same year SC Johnson also squired Sun Bum.

Coola Mineral Matte Tinted Sunscreen
COOLA’s tinted face sunscreens are excellent. Their Mineral Matte Tinted Sunscreen is one of my top tinted sunscreen picks. lt’s truly an amazing BB Cream with SPF option for those of you looking. The Coola Mineral Matte Tinted Sunscreen feels velvety, dries matte but still leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized. It has a natural & neutral beige tint that would work for most light and possibly tan skin tones.
Mineral Matte also contains ingredients like Cucumber Fruit Extract, Evening Primrose Oil, Linseed Seed Oil, Rose Hip Oil & Shea Butter to fight free radicals, leave skin hydrated and retain moisture. There’s also the Cucumber version that has no tint but basically feels like the exact same formula with a light cucumber scent. The Coola Mineral Matte Tinted Sunscreen contains:
- Mineral Active Ingredients
- Preservative Free Formula
- Water Resistant (40 minutes)
I’m disappointed by the new 2022 version of the original Mineral Matte sunscreen. The new 2022 version doesn’t have the same texture or consistency and feels greasy. I would not purchase the new version. Thankfully COOLA keeps the original Mineral Matte Tinted Sunscreen stocked in their Amazon store.
Coola Sun Silk Drops
One of my least favorite COOLA products is the Sun Silk Drops, and it seems like one of those love it or hate it type products. Even with my dry skin type, I didn’t enjoy this sunscreen, and I don’t think oily skin types would enjoy the Sun Silk Drops at all. It is an ultra lightweight liquid consistency but leaves my skin overly dewy. The Sun Silk Drops feels just a tad too slick for my liking. It also contains only chemical UV filters.
For liquid sunscreen, I prefer the Zitsticka Megashade SPF 50 or Mychelle Sun Shield Liquid SPF 50.
Coola Mineral Sun Silk Creme
COOLA Sun Silk Creme is a full 360 degree spectrum product that protects against the sun, blue light, infrared, and pollution. I prefer the Sun Silk Cream over the Sun Silk Drops. The Coola Sun Silk Creme feels more like a moisturizing lotion, dries matte and uses non-nano Zinc Oxide instead of their usual Avobenzone/Homosalate/Octosalate. Major plus! It does have some white cast so I can’t see the Sun Silk Creme working for darker skin tones.
COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen SPF 50
The COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen is a thin lightweight lotion that goes on completely invisible. It feels hydrating, and while it can be a little too slick for my personal preference, the COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen is not at all greasy or heavy. The Classic Face Sunscreen comes in Unscented and White Tea scent. I find the White Tea scent calming and not at all overpowering. Because this is a chemical sunscreen it would not be a daily go-to for me, not to mention the burning sensation if any seeps into my eyes.
The COOLA Classic Face Sunscreen contains COOLA’s Plant Protection Complex of Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Buriti Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, and Prickly Pear Extract to help fight free radicals and nourish skin.
Coola Scalp & Hair Mist
COOLA’s organic scalp and hair mist is SPF haircare that provides SPF 30 protection using chemical UV filters. With summer around the corner, if you’re looking to help prevent UV-related hair color fading an SPF hair mist is a great addition to your haircare regimen. The COOLA Scalp & Hair Mist is made with 70% organic ingredients including Monoi Oil to nourish scalp and hair. The mist is made up mostly of alcohol denatured so it sprays on like water and isn’t heavy or oily. It has a subtle salted ocean sage smell.
I have yet to see another clean spf hair mist, so the COOLA Scalp & Hair Mist might be the only one available. If you’ve ever gotten a sunburn on your hairline you know that it can be a nuisance. I’m all for protecting the scalp and hair from damaging UV rays if at all possible. I’m not a chemist but I imagine it would be difficult to create a 100% mineral hair mist without adding some kind of chemical UV filter bevause the spray would go on white and weigh down hair.
COOLA Rosilliance BB Cream SPF 30
Another great COOLA tinted face sunscreen, the Rosilliance BB Cream is a sheer lightweight tinted moisturizer that comes in three shades. The light/medium shade is a tad too dark but because it’s so sheer it just makes me look tan. The COOLA Rosilliance BB cream gives my skin a dewy finish while providing very light coverage. It’s perfect if you want your skin to look like yours while your minor blemishes are blurred. The Rosilliance cream also uses physical UV filter titanium dioxide to provide UV protection.
I love that the Rose Stem Cells and Organic oils of acai berry, rice bran, sunflower & safflower seed smooth & moisturize my skin throughout the day. Some other great factors:
• Water Resistant (80 minutes)
• Plant Stem Cell Protection
• 70%+ Certified Organic Ingredients
• Vegan
COOLA’s Rosilliance is another favorite for mineral tinted sunscreens if you’re looking for something a little luxurious.
COOLA Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30
The COOLA Makeup Setting Spray is such a lifesaver if you need easy reapplication of sunscreen over makeup. When I’m out and about with a face of makeup on and need to be reapplying sunscreen every 2 hours I don’t want to ruin all my makeup by rubbing in sunscreen. I spray about 5 times all over my face while keeping my eyes closed (very important as it’ll burn your eyes) and voila I stay protected for a few more hours. The cons of the COOLA Makeup Sunscreen Spray are that it’s not a mineral sunscreen and contains a lot of alcohol. The scent of alcohol is very strong and you need to be careful it doesn’t get in your eyes.

Coola Mineral Liplux Organic Tinted Lip Balm Sunscreen SPF 30
If you’re looking for a luxury tinted spf lip balm with sun protection, the COOLA Mineral Liplux is a great option. This is another COOLA product that is 100% mineral with Titanium Dioxide 3.6% and Zinc Oxide 3.0%.
The Mineral Liplux Tinted Lip Balms are buttery smooth and feel nourishing with plenty of butters like organic cupuaçu butter and mongongo oil.
I prefer the Skinny Dip and Nude Beach shades because they don’t contain petroleum derived lake dyes. The other shades do contain them to achieve the color.
COOLA Sunscreen Spray
COOLA Sunscreen Sprays use chemical UV filters + 70% organic ingredients. I was sent their body sunscreens to try out and found the COOLA sunscreen sprays particularly useful during my island vacation trips as I had to protect my entire body plus reapply every few hours or after swimming. Love the deliciously tropical Guava Mango scent. If you’re not avoiding chemical UV filters, I have nothing else bad to say about the COOLA body sunscreen sprays. Excellent even spray mist, excellent protection and excellent smell. Because they are chemical, the COOLA sunscreen sprays go on clear.

COOLA Classic Body Sunscreen
The COOLA Body Classic Sunscreens are a very lightweight and runny sunscreen. They’re made with 70%+ certified organic ingredients, and formulated with patented Oleosome technology which boost the effectiveness of UVA/UVB filters. It’s very much a body moisturizer infused with SPF as it contains free radical fighting Organic Rose Hip Oil to deliver essential Fatty Acids, Minerals and Vitamin C. Organic Evening Primrose, which is rich in Omegas 3 and 6, calms, tones, hydrates and aids in reducing redness, and organic Shea Butter, which is high in Vitamins A and F, smoothes, softens and balances skin.

Coola Organic Sunless Tan Anti Aging Face Serum
The Coola Organic Sunless Tan serum delivers a gradual tans lasting up to 3 days and contains 70%+ organic ingredients including a blend of Argan Oil, Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid and plant stem cell cultures. Please note it does NOT provide sun protection. It takes about 2-4 hours for the tan to develop or you can mix a few drops into your facial moisturizer for a more gradual tan.
Sadly I would not repurchase the Coola Organic Sunless Tan Anti Aging Serum. It made my skin turn orange with repeated use and does not have any sun protection benefits, so just not worth it to me. If I really needed an organic face tanner, the Beauty By Earth sunless tanner is much more affordable.

Coola Sunless Tan Body Serum Before and After
I treated the COOLA Sunless Tan Luminizing Body Serum and loved it! It’s 70% organic, Ecocert Ceritifed & 99% natural. The Sunless Tan serum contains pearlescent mica for a sunlit golden shimmer, & sugar-beet derived DHA for that post-vacation radiance- with a pina colada scent.
.
I applied 3 pumps for top half of leg & 3 for the bottom. The COOLA sunless tan gives it an immediate subtle tan glow and in two hours it deepens to a real looking tan. The COOLA sunless tan serum completely absorbs and doesn’t stain onto bed sheets even if you get sweaty at night like me. You can use it daily to build the tan. One use lasts 2-3 days as it fades though this will likely depend on factors like if you exfoliate etc.
COOLA Sunless Tan Dry Oil Mist Before and After
I found that the COOLA Sunless Tan Dry Oil works the same as the serum – it just has a different consistency (oil) and method of application (spray). The oil is a thin dry oil that absorbs well and doesn’t feel heavy.
