I’ve tried a bunch of peptide serums over the last ten years and I’m sharing the best ones. They’re a do-it-all skincare ingredient that fights all the common aging signs like wrinkles, collagen loss, and loss of firmness. In today’s article, I’m breaking down what peptides actually do, which types to look for, how to use them, and the peptide serums in clean beauty.

What Are Peptides?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin. Collagen keeps skin firm and elastin helps it bounce back, but our bodies make less of both as we age, starting as early as our mid-20s. When skin breaks down collagen, it leaves behind peptide fragments, and the idea behind topical peptides is that they mimic those fragments and act as messengers, signaling skin to make more collagen and repair itself.
Types of Peptides in Skincare
- Signal peptides — The most common type. They tell skin to produce more collagen and elastin.
- Matrixyl 3000 · palmitoyl tripeptide-1 + palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7
- Matrixyl · palmitoyl pentapeptide-4
- Carrier peptides — These deliver trace minerals like copper to the skin to support healing and collagen production.
- GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide) · copper tripeptide-1
- Neurotransmitter-inhibiting peptides — Often called “Botox-like” peptides, these may help relax the muscle movements that cause expression lines.
- Argireline · acetyl hexapeptide-8
- Enzyme-inhibiting peptides — These help slow the natural breakdown of collagen. Many come from plant sources.
- Soy peptides
- Rice peptides
- Pea peptides
Benefits of Peptide Serums
- Firmer skin — Signal and carrier peptides support collagen and elastin, which helps skin look tighter and more lifted over time.
- Softer fine lines — Plumping and collagen-boosting peptides can visibly smooth fine lines and wrinkles.
- A stronger skin barrier — Peptides help skin repair itself and hold on to moisture, so it feels less dry and reactive.
- Gentle on sensitive skin — Peptides rarely cause redness, peeling, or irritation, unlike retinoids and strong acids.
- Easy to layer — Most peptides work well alongside hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and moisturizers.
How to Pick the Right Peptide Serum
First, look at which peptides are actually in the formula and how high they appear on the ingredient list. A serum that lists peptides near the end may not contain enough to make a real difference. Formulas that combine several types of peptides tend to address more concerns at once, since signal, carrier, and neurotransmitter peptides each work a little differently.
How to Use a Peptide Serum
Apply your peptide serum after cleansing and toning, and before moisturizer. Most peptide serums can be used both morning and night, and you’ll want to follow with sunscreen during the day. Give it time: most people see an instant boost in hydration, but firmness and fine line results usually take 8 to 12 weeks of consistent use.
Peptides pair well with most ingredients, but there are a couple of exceptions. Strong exfoliating acids like AHAs and BHAs can break peptides down, so it’s best to use them at different times of day. Copper peptides in particular may not mix well with vitamin C, so use them in separate routines, for example vitamin C in the morning and copper peptides at night.

I tried goop beauty Youth-Boost Peptide Serum
I’m consistently impressed by goop’s skincare and their Youth-Boost Peptide Serum is a multitasker with peptides that target sagging and crepiness, astaxanthin-rich microalgae and paracress to firm and lift, niacinamide and black tea ferment to even skin tone and brighten, and bifidus postbiotics and ceramides to support the skin barrier. I also appreciate they conducted clinical trials by plastic surgeon Dr. Julius Few. It’s fragrance-free and made for all skin types. I find that it has a silky hydrating true-serum consistency that sinks in and absorbs well without feeling tacky.

I tried Remedy Copper Peptide Complex Advanced Firming Serum (budget!)
Dr. Shah’s Remedy Copper Peptide Complex Advanced Firming Serum is their newest peptide serum and one of the most affordable in this lineup. It’s made with a 1% complex of pure GHK-Cu, plus Argireline and palmitoyl tripeptide-5, so it targets collagen, elasticity, and expression lines all at once. Hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid hydrate, while ectoin, allantoin, and centella asiatica soothe and support the skin barrier. It’s fragrance-free, vegan, dermatologist-developed, and tested on sensitive skin, so it’s a great first copper peptide serum. The blue color of the serum is a good sign and comes from the copper peptide itself. GHK-Cu is a copper ion bound to a small peptide, and that copper complex is naturally deep blue. Remedy uses a fairly high 1% concentration, so the serum comes out noticeably blue and deeper than other peptide serums I’ve tried.

I tried Biossance Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum
Biossance’s Squalane + Copper Peptide Rapid Plumping Serum is another fantastic peptide serum that’s relatively affordable, especially for how much product you’re getting. It combines copper tripeptide-1 to support collagen and elastin with hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid for an instant plumping boost, plus sugarcane-derived squalane to lock in moisture. It also contains paracress extract, a plant ingredient that gives skin an instant tightening effect. It’s a great pick if your skin is dehydrated as well as losing firmness. This comes in a generous 1.7oz bottle so a lot more product than most other standard 1oz serums and has a light blue hue from the copper peptide.

I tried MARA Pearl Peptide Glaze Facial Essence
MARA’s Pearl Peptide Glaze is a 3-in-1 essence, toner, and serum that gives skin a glassy, lit-from-within glow. This is great if you want a light fluid serum versus a traditional serum consistency and is made with vegan marine collagen peptides and palmitoyl tripeptide-1 to support collagen, pearl powder to brighten, and beta-glucan, a super hydrating alternative to hyaluronic acid. Algae and sea silt help balance redness and smooth texture. It’s lightweight enough to use as a first step after cleansing, and it makes a great base for makeup. It’s fragrance-free and alcohol-free and has just the slightest scent from its natural ingredients. I love how elegant this feels, like a milky essence, and it’s so versatile.

I tried Timeless Matrixyl 3000 Serum
Timeless Matrixyl 3000 Serum is a cult favorite for a peptide serum and the most affordable option in this list. Matrixyl 3000 is a blend of two well-studied signal peptides, palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7, which work together to support collagen and soften the look of fine lines. It’s got the simplest ingredients list of just six ingredients, with hyaluronic acid for hydration and aloe to soothe, and it’s fragrance-free. It has a lightweight texture that layers easily under moisturizer. If you want to try peptides without spending a lot, this is the place to start. Simple and straightforward for those who just want the peptide and don’t care for much else.

I tried Oak Essentials Firming Plant Peptide Serum
Oak Essentials’ Firming Plant Peptide Serum is a natural peptide serum with 93% natural origins that’s available at ULTA and is made without silicones, sulfates, phthalates, parabens, PEGs, and mineral oil. Instead of lab-made peptides, It’s made with pea peptide to help plump skin and support elasticity, Celtic sea plankton for an instant smoothing effect, and tiger plant, known as the “plant of longevity,” which contains a peptide that supports skin renewal. It’s also got hydration benefits from Upcycled Apple and a strengthening Barrier Renewal Complex. I find it to have a juicy thin serum consistency and I can see some ingredients distended within the serum. This is the most natural peptide formula I’ve come across.

I tried Dr. Diamond’s Metacine InstaFacial Plasma
I’ve used up a few of Dr. Diamond’s Metacine InstaFacial Plasma serums and it’s one of the most advanced I’ve come across in years of testing. It uses five bioengineered, human-identical growth factors (IGF, EGF, VEGF, FGF-1, and FGF-2) paired with three peptides: copper tripeptide-1, Argireline, and palmitoyl tripeptide-56. Together, they’re designed to smooth fine lines, support firmness, and help fade dark spots. It gets its soft pink color from radish root extract, so the shade can vary a little from batch to batch. It’s fragrance-free, vegan, made for all skin types including sensitive skin, and light enough to wear under makeup.

I tried Clearstem Bounceback Fine Lines Serum
This used to be Calle their Peptide Powerhouse Serum and has a tri-peptide complex combined with plant stem cells, Ginseng Root, Green Tea, and even an Ayurvedic herb called chirata. This has got a fluid serum consistency that’s super hydrating and absorbs well without pilling. Clearstem is specifically formulated for acne prone skin so this is good brand to look into if you experience breakouts. It’s priced on the premium end, but you do get a little more product than most other brands.

I tried RéVive Renewal Rescue Elixir Oil
RéVive’s Renewal Rescue Elixir Oil proves peptides don’t have to come in a gel-oil serum. This luxurious facial oil is made with RéVive’s RV Renewal Peptide, which supports skin renewal and helps refine and smooth skin, plus two biomimetic peptides, hexapeptide-9 and tetrapeptide-4, to support collagen, elastin, and fibronectin. Coconut, olive, safflower, and meadowfoam seed oils nourish and strengthen the skin barrier. Since it’s more of an oil than a serum, it’s meant to be the last step of your nighttime routine. This doesn’t feel super oily but more like a gel-like oil and I like using this on its own since its got such good actives and ingredients.

I tried Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum
For my K-beauyt lovers, Medicube’s PDRN Pink Peptide Serum is one of the most popular K-beauty peptide serums right now. It’s got a whole lineup of peptides, including copper tripeptide-1, Argireline, and Matrixyl peptides, with salmon PDRN, an ingredient made from salmon DNA for skin repair and regeneration. It also has niacinamide to brighten, hyaluronic acid to hydrate, and collagen. The texture is lightweight and layers well. Keep in mind that the PDRN comes from salmon, so it isn’t vegan. This is a very lightweight serum that feels hydrating and pleasant, plus it’s affordable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use peptides with retinol?
Yes. Peptides and retinol work well together, and peptides may even help offset some of the dryness and irritation retinol can cause. Apply your peptide serum first, or alternate nights if your skin is sensitive.
Are peptides better than retinol?
They’re different. Retinol has more research behind it for wrinkles and texture, but it can be irritating. Peptides are gentler and safe for most skin types, so they’re a good alternative if retinol doesn’t agree with you, or a good partner if it does.
Can I use a peptide serum during pregnancy?
Peptides are generally considered a gentler choice than retinoids during pregnancy, but every formula is different, so check with your doctor before adding a new product.
At what age should I start using peptides?
There’s no set age, but many people start in their late 20s or 30s, when collagen production begins to slow. Peptides can help maintain firmness before fine lines become more noticeable.
How long do peptides take to work?
You’ll often notice more hydrated, plumper skin right away from the other ingredients in the formula. Firmness and fine line results typically take 8 to 12 weeks.
