I tried the Best Body Butters in Clean Beauty

I’ve tried tons of natural body butters and I’m sharing the best ones for dry skin that leave skin moisturized without harmful ingredients. The best body butter is made with plant goodness and without any harmful or questionable ingredients.

After years of using clean body butters, I’m rating the top brands across various price points, thickness level, scent strength and textures to help you find the best one for you! No two are exactly alike!

Is a Body Butter Better?

There’s a number of reasons I love using a body butter over a lotion:

  • Thicker, richer texture for when my skin is particularly dry
  • You’re not paying for water
  • 100% concentrated and has butters and oils as a base (more bang for your buck!)
  • Provides longer-lasting moisture than a lotion
  • Great for really rough and flaky skin like elbows and knees
shelter skin tallow body butter vanilla

I tried Shelter Skin Tallow Body Butter No 1 Vanilla

My latest discovery is Shelter Skin’s Tallow Vanilla Body Butter and I highly recommend it if you’re a body butter fanatic. Shelter Skin is the only organic body butter I’ve found that you can refill at home. What truly sets Shelter Skin is apart is they offer a jumbo 17 oz option that’s 3x the amount of product of the regular size and a normal refill size. It makes so much sense to offer this to customers who love the product while cutting down on unnecessary waste.

The formula is refreshingly simple: five organic ingredients of grass-fed, grass-finished beef tallow, jojoba oil, vanilla bean, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, and vitamin E. The scent is incredible, and I’ve tried many body care products (and I like to consider myself a fragrance snob). it smells like real vanilla bean scraped straight from the pod, whipped into a warm, almost buttercream-like richness. Texture-wise, it’s dense, emollient, rich, and melts easily on contact. This is a new brand worth putting on your radar.

Price: $64 for 6.76 oz | Refill price: $54 | Jumbo price (17oz): $132
Thickness level: dense
Scent strength: medium-strong
Key actives: Tallow, Vitamin E

osea undaria body butter

I tried OSEA Undaria Body Butter

OSEA’s Undaria Body Butter has a lush medium-rich consistency that’s so moisturizing for dry skin. This one stands out from the crowd with skincare actives that are good enough for my face like Undaria Seaweed, Amino Acid DPHP ceramides, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caffeine, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, meadowfoam Seed Oil, and Rice Bran Extract. This feels like a creamy body butter, especially compared to how emollient 100% natural body butters usually are.

It has a delicious citrus scent that isn’t too overpowering but is still noticeably present. I feel like OSEA’s body butter actually provides long lasting hydration and is great for older skin thanks to all the advanced skincare actives included.

Price: $54 for 6.7oz
Thickness level: medium
Scent strength: medium
Key actives: Undaria Seaweed, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caffeine, Aloe, Amino Acid DPHP

corpus naturals body butter green

I tried Corpus Naturals Nº Green Body Butter

Corpus Natural’s Body Butter has the most satisfying silkiest texture in a body butter I’ve tried. I think it’s also the best body butter for men out there. Their Green Body Butter is surprisingly well formulated despite the phenoxyethanol and has tremella mushroom, vegan squalene, Sunflower Seed Oil, and Grape Seed Oil.

Their Green scent is intoxicating and it blows my mind they’ve achieved this all naturally through the root, seed, stem, pulp and rind of citrus plants and spices. It’s a complex verdant aroma that’s bright and uplifting with notes of bergamot, orange blossom, pink lemon and cardamom. I might even go as far as calling this narcotic as they say in the fragrance world.

This has a super silky smooth texture to it and not a traditional whipped airy one. It’s medium thick for me and feels deeply moisturizing. I can tell it’s on the more processed side due to how perfectly smooth the texture is, but if you want something that feels like Josie Maran Whipped Body Butter, Corpus Naturals is one to have on your radar.

Price: $58 for 5.5oz
Thickness level: medium-rich
Scent strength: strong
Key actives: Vegan Squalene, Tremella Mushroom
⚠️ Contains Phenoxyethanol ✓ No Synthetic Fragrances ✓ Phthalate free ✓ Paraben-free  ✓ Gluten-free  ✓ Vegan

natural body cream Red Flower arctic berry cloud milk cream

I tried Red Flower arctic berry cloud milk cream

Red Flower’s arctic berry cloud milk cream is the OG of luxury body butters and it’s so good it’s frequently sold out! It’s 100% natural and has the most heavenly airy mousse consistency that melts on contact. It’s not a true body lotion nor a true body butter, and feels like a very light whipped body butter-cream. Sorry if that’s confusing!

Red Flower has somehow managed to make a whipped texture out of all natural oils, butters and botanical extracts like apricot oil, glycerin, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, cloudberry seed oil, strawberry seed oil, birch bud extract, garden mint oil, rosewood oil, and certified organic honey.

Their body care products are high-end enough for luxury spas, and I can attest to the fact they do not disappoint if you want to recreate a spa experience at home. For a richer consistency their tangerine fig butter creme is full of lush butters and oils like shea butter, Douglas fir needle oil, black olive butter, and fig.

Price: $55 for 4oz
Thickness level: very light mousse
Scent strength: light-medium
Key actives: apricot oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, cloudberry seed oil, strawberry seed oil

primally pure body butter eucalyptus natural nontoxic

I tried Primally Pure Eucalyptus Lavender Body Butter

Primally Pure’s body butters are all natural and organic body with a truly whipped buttery consistency. These are rich and dense body butters that can deeply moisturize dry skin but also leans oily. The butter melts on contact and turn into an oily balm where a little goes a long way.

I love that it’s almost entirely organic with Organic Tallow from grass-fed cows, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Mango Butter, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Olive Oil, Organic Sweet Almond Oil, and essential oils.

The only downside is the 4oz jar only contains about 2.8oz of actual product and runs out very quickly. I’ve gone through multiple jars of both their yummy Almond Vanilla scent and Eucalyptus Lavender scent and each 4oz jar lasts around 5 uses if I apply all over my body. I feel like they add a substantial amount of essential oils because the scent is noticeable and not what I’d consider subtle.

Price: $30 for 4oz
Thickness level: very rich
Scent strength: medium
Key actives: Organic tallow, organic coconut oil, organic mango butter

saltair body butter multi lipid golden hour

I tried Saltair Multi-Lipid Body Butter

Saltair has the lightest consistency I’ve ever experienced in a body butter and feels like an airy mousse. It’s totally weightless (literally feels like Reddi-wip!) and absorbs instantly compared to richer body butters.

Their Multi-Lipid Body Butter has ceramides, essential fatty acids, phospholipids and phytosterols from coconut and sea buckthorn oils. Saltair provides double the amount of product compared to other body butters I’ve tried, but the thinner consistency means you do end up using more product in the end.

I find their Golden Hour and Salt Water Vanilla extremely summer-y and strongly scented. Salt Water Vanilla is a gourmand with notes of vanilla, sea salt and sandalwood and Golden Hour is a yummy tropical scent with sunflower, pineapple and coconut.

Disclaimer: Saltair is the least clean product in this list, but they’re super affordable if you’re on a budget and want something better than conventional. Saltair is paraben-free, gluten-free and vegan.

Price: $21 for 10oz
Thickness level: very light
Scent strength: very strong
Key actives: Coconut oil, sea buckthorn oil

Homecourt body butter cocomoi

I tried Homecourt Cocomoi Body Butter

Homecourt’s Body Butter is surprisingly really good with a super lush and hydrating consistency that’s not at all greasy. It’s got natural clay minerals, organic rosella botanical extract, upcycled sugar beet extract, plant-sourced vitamin E and shea butter to deeply hydrate the driest skin.

It feels a little lighter in consistency than Corpus Naturals’. Their Cece scent is my Homecourt scents but Cocomoi has got the yummiest grounding coconut aroma with notes of coconut water, cedarwood, creamy fig, sweet cardamom, vetiver and black pepper.

This is a very fragrant body butter, so may not be your cup of tea if you prefer barely there scents. I do appreciate this comes with a lot of product and lasts longer than some of my other natural body butters. I’d consider this to be a medium-rich consistency and it does take a little bit of time to absorb.

Price: $56 for 6.7oz
Thickness level: medium rich
Scent strength: strong
Key actives: shea butter, bentonite clay, organic rosella botanical extract, upcycled sugar beet extract

I tried Mutha Body Butter

This is an extremely rich body butter that’s 100% natural and made with shea, cocoa, and mango butters, avocado oil and essential oils. Mutha is definitely the richest body butter I’ve tried and also the most expensive at $100 for 5.5 oz. It feels similar to Primally Pure’s body butter without the whipped texture and a straightup butter texture. It’s got a 100% natural origin citrus scent from essential oils that isn’t too overpowering but still impactful. I personally think this body butter is overpriced for what it offers as there’s no indication that the ingredients are certified organic like with other clean beauty body butters.

Price: $100 for 5.5oz
Thickness level: very rich
Scent strength: light-medium
Key actives: shea, cocoa, and mango butters

New in clean beauty: I’m excited about the newest body butter launches like Ursa Major Golden Hour Body Butter, Le Prunier Plumbody Body Butter and Innersense Blissful Body Butter.
